More About the Author

Virgil, born in 70 B.C., is best remembered for his masterpiece, The Aeneid. He earned great favor by portraying Augustus as a descendant of the half-god, half-man Aeneas. Although Virgil swore on his deathbed that The Aeneid was incomplete and unworthy, it has been considered one of the greatest works of Western literature for more than two thousand years.

Like the same author's edition of Aeneid Book I, I found this an exceptionally helpful edition of Aeneid Book IV. Maclennan leaves you in no doubt how he thinks the Latin works, there's a very useful vocabulary in the back of the book, and lots of interesting factual information in the Introduction. I am looking forward to reading the same author's Book VI.

Contains an introduction which goes through all the main themes in the book, the Latin text, and an extremely thorough section of notes at the back. Well worth purchasing if you are currently doing this text at A-Level.

The best thing about this book is having the list of all necessary vocabularly at the back, with general translations and even, where appropriate, translations according to context. The notes are also very helpful and there is a long introduction with information on the cultural, historical and literary background of the Aeneid; the main characters and their motivations; a summary of the rest of the Aeneid; and an overview of the meter and how Virgil uses it.

Book 4 is the one with the story of Dido's fatal love for Aeneas. If you only read one book of the Aeneid, this is a good one to go for.

A useful student edition 21 Aug 2013

This new commentary explains most of the grammatical difficulties that I have encountered in reading the fourth book of Vergil's Aeneid. It is definitely an improvement on the older edition, which is not always the case.
Highly recommended 23 Dec 2013

I can speak with authority on the Aeneid. I am the author of one book, twelve articles, and one encyclopedia entry on the Aeneid. I also taught the Aeneid in Latin and English for many years. I retired from my professorship several years ago, but I have recently begun to teach Latin to a few private students.
I have found this commentary and its introduction to be extremely helpful, both for the nuances of translation and for the literary qualities of Aeneid IV. In fact, it is the best teaching commentary I have ever used (and I have used many). I recommend that it be used in conjunction with James O’Hara’s commentary.
