Book Description

12 May 2011 Tory Brennan (Book 1)

Tory Brennan is as fascinated by bones and dead bodies as her famous aunt, acclaimed forensic anthropologist, Tempe Brennan. However living on a secluded island off Charleston in South Carolina there is not much opportunity to put her knowledge to the test. Until she and her group of technophile friends stumble across a shallow grave containing the remains of a girl who has been missing for over thirty years.

With the cold-case murder suddenly hot, Tory realises that they are involved in something fatally dangerous. And when they rescue a sick dog from a laboratory on the same island, it becomes evident that somehow the two events are linked.

On the run from forces they don't understand, they have only each other to fall back on. Until they succumb to a mysterious infection that heightens their senses and hones their instincts to impossible levels. Their illness seems to have changed their very biology - and suddenly it's clear that the island is home to something well beyond their comprehension. It's a secret that has driven men to kill once. And will drive them to kill again...

Review

"If you love Bones, you'll love Virals" (James Patterson)

"I love this book because first and foremost, the plot was perfectly paced and well-written plus Kathy's writing is so vivid and undeniably engrossing! I just love it!...The action, mystery and humor in the story are all well-balanced...highly entertaining and educational as well. I'm giving this 5 out of 5 stars and I HIGHLY recommend this to all YA Mystery, Sci-Fi Fantasy buffs out there." (girlaboutbooks)

"Kathy Reichs gets it dead right with sharp writing and a plot that throws a bunch of very real teens into a deadly adult world . . . . I loved it and I'm sure fans of Alex Rider will love it too." (Anthony Horowitz)

"Mystery... fantasy... science... and heart-stopping action - this book is DANGEROUS. After I read Tory Brennan's first adventure, I wanted more, more, MORE." (R.L. Stine, author of Goosebumps)

By E. Heckingbottom TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
More and more famous authors who write for adults are turning their hands to books for teenagers and young adults now, and the results are intriguing. First, we had James Patterson with the Maximum Ride series; then John Grisham with Theodore Boone. Now, Kathy Reichs joins them with her first book for Young Adults - Virals - and the result is intriguing.

Tory Brennan is the 14 year old great-niece of the famous Tempe Brennan (from the books rather than the TV series version!) Her father, Kit, is the son of Tempe's sister, Harry. However, for the first 13 1/2 years of her life, she did not know either her father or her famous Aunt.
After the sudden death of her mother in a tragic accident, she moves to live with him on an island off the coast of Charleston, part of the University Research facility. Near their island is another island - one where monkeys run wild along with a pack of wolfdogs.
Life is very different here for Tory. Her friends are three boys of similar ages who live in neighbouring houses. School is on the mainland - reached by boat; however, the neighbouring island, Loggerhead Island, is the one that attracts the foursome the most. On one visit, one of the monkeys throws a piece of metal at the teenagers. They return to the island inthe hope of using the scientific resources to clean it ... and their troubles begin! Troubles which include ...
... A rescued wolfdog pup who is gravely ill and has to be looked after
... A dead body - from 40 years ago, discovered and then hidden
... Attempts on their lives
... Strange things happening to the teenager's bodies as a virus attacks them, leaving them with unusual powers

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple Story told with Verve and Pace 4 Sep 2011
Format:Hardcover
Firstly I cannot believe the number of reviewers who give this a 1 star because they didn't bother to find out that it was aimed at a different market: the description is clear and the publisher Arrow (Young) is a bit of a give-away! Their logic seems to be that 'I was careless/stupid therefore the book is rubbish'.

As an avid reader of Artemis Fowl, Alex rider and Harry Potter novels this is another good effort in a similar vein. Very simple and direct as with her Tempe Brennan stories and a clear exciting plot. Arguably Kathy Reichs hasn't quite got the measure of Young peoples writing right yet, as the tales varies between very simple with lots of shorts words to complex English and back again in places. However, I will certainly be getting any sequels.

1.0 out of 5 stars Forget the Virals 14 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
Please get back to Temperance Brennan and her life and on / off relationship withAndrew Ryan I was really surprised at this book as it is not up to the standard of Kathy Reichs and it is the first of her books that I have not enjoyed. I found the story rather far fetched and predictable and boring. I won't be reading any more of the Virals series.
Leave the Virals and get back to Temp.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Solid Beginning 19 Jan 2012
Format:Paperback
Firstly, I would really prefer to give the book 4 1/2 stars as it did have a couple of flaws but I guess I'm trying to over-compensate for the ridiculously low rating that it has ended up with. Secondly, I bought the book knowing that it was designed for Young Adult readership (thanks to other reviewers, NOT the publisher!).

Meet Tory Brennan - great-niece of the renowned Temperance Brennan. Tory has just moved in with her father, Kit, who lives & works on a small island, doing scientific research at the lab on the island. Tory Brennan is of above-average intelligence and fascinated by bones - a hereditary trait. She is adjusting to the loss of her mother and trying to form a relationship with her father, whom she hardly knows. This included putting up with the woman he is dating. Tory's best friends are three intelligent boys - whose parents also work on the island. They attend a private school on a neighbouring island but are somewhat outsiders - they are only "allowed" to attend it because of where their parents work. Their status is below that of under-privileged scholarship kids.

The kids wind up embroiled in two mysteries - the rescue of a wild wolf pup from a clinical research project and trying to establish the identity of bones they have come across.

Now - the characters are somewhat reminiscent of Blyton's 'Famous Five'. Fortunately, Reichs is far more PC influenced than Blyton ever was! The island setting contributes to this feeling of Blyton deja vu - it could be Kirrin Island and, yes, there's a dog. But, Reichs draws her characters beautifully. There are tense moments between adults and children. The children, realistically, feel that no-one believes them because of their age - which is also well depicted.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun mystery/fantasy/adventure story 4 Sep 2011
Format:Hardcover
Tory Brennan is a fourteen year old living on an island near Charleston with a marine biologist as a father after the untimely death of her mother. She and her friends save a wolfdog from an institute that is testing a new strain of a virus on it. Soon after, they all start to get ill and weird things start happening to them. On top of this, they find some old bones that they work out belong to a girl who went missing many years ago. Then they get sucked into this mystery/fantasy adventure.
From the blurb, I didn't see much of an original fantasy concept. But the fantasy in this book is DNA being altered somewhat, which makes a very nice change to all the vampires and shapeshifters I normally read.
The plot is very good. A lot happens and it's paced very well, apart from possibly the start where everything has to be laid out and is therefore a little slow. From just before the second half, there's always something new happening. I like the fact that it's written from Tory's point of view, but where she's actually talking to you. The informal style works well, makes you feel slightly involved in the story and adds a bit more to the writing.
The characters were all fleshed out very well, even those that didn't have much of a part. We got descriptions of backstories and a lot of other things, which made them all feel real. Some of them got on my nerves a lot, from the way Rory felt about them and described them to us, but I think that's the way they were supposed to be written. I liked the little twists we find out about the characters just before they get written out of the story.
Tory seemed to know a lot for her age.
