Just like insurance there are different levels of protection which suit a variety of needs. If you are into the file sharing scene then you are at a higher risk and should have better protection than a user who only ever visits trusted web sites. The more protection and scanning you employ, then the more of an effect it will have on system performance, so trying to find the right level of protection can be a bit tricky
Vipre seems to have struck a good balance of security and performance.
Installation of Vipre is simple and straight forward, no real computer knowledge is required and a user can simply choose all defaults. Within a few minutes it is done and you are required to re-boot yopur machine.
As with most anti-virus programs, you will need to disable or uninstall any existing virus protection. Vipre integrates with Windows security centre and with outlook, OE express, thunderbird and there is another option for other mailboxes.
I have this installed Vipre on a VMWare windows machine and there has been no noticable degradation of performance.
The interface is clean and simple, with decent enough descriptions for the options. Updating and scanning can be automated or manually run.
Vipre detected a few files I had that I knew were infected, which is what you would expect. I also fed it a few files that I know are falsely detected by others AV programs - it stayed quiet which is a bonus for me.
Downloading my emails had no significant delay as the attachments were being checked prior to opening.
Anti-spyware was fast and efficient. I tried some spyware that tries to change my home page, install keys into registry, removed content, privacy and a few others. Each time Vipre window fired up and blocked the code from executing. Also tried to change hosts file, but that got blocked too.
On top of this there is a secure file deletion tool and an Internet history cleaning tool which are all simple point and click tools.
All in all I am impressed by the simplicicty of this software and its high level of protection. The price is competitive for a single user licence and the value is even better for a home/site licence covering more than 1 PC
Initial set-up was pretty easy. It took some time with updating online, but that's a minor grumble. An initial scan took just over half an hour, and thankfully didn't find anything dodgy on my machine. I've since been doing a daily scan and thankfully nothing else has occurred... because Vipre is keeping stuff at bay.
Sunbelt claim this software doesn't slow down your PC. I've not noticed any lagging, or other visible slow-down when running many programs at one time, so I have no grumbles there. (I'm unsure if it would affect running games on your machine, though, as I don't use this machine for gaming.) This is definitely less intrusive in comparison to Norton, which, personally, is fine with me, but others may prefer the constant reminders by Norton, etc.
It does what it says it should, and I can ask for nothing more. It's definitely a worthy purchase, and possibly just as good, or better, than its competitors. 4/5 overall (it cost a little more than others) but highly recommended.
Well the one thing that you need to remember is this. In the business of anti-virus the constant was between the virus makers and virus cleaners is ever on-going. To continually develop heuristics to combat evolving viruses is very expensive (I outsourced several investment banks AV service because of the growing costs) and here in lies the problem. Other companies have to pay and wait before they get an AV solution to a new breakout. This can be almost as soon as one is developed for some buyers of the solution to weeks later for others.
It's in this camp of 'weeks later' I suspect VIPRE lives in. It protects against what is currently out there but I imagine that when a new attack arises then you could be vulnerable for several weeks until Vipre gets the latest update. Not so bad if the virus in non-destructive, but really bad if it is.
If you're not too woriied about things then VIPRE seems reasonable. If you want to have the latest and greatest updates asap, then I'm inclined to stick with Symantec.
