Glasgow based trio Chris Gordon, Dave McClean and Craig Grant finally unleash their debut album, no doubt much to delight of their dedicated fanbase. Though on the back of praise from the likes of Radio 1's Zane Lowe, the question must be asked, is it actually any good, or yet more over-hyped MOR pop?

On first listen I found the album to be pleasant enough, but perhaps a little shallow and uninvolving, with "style over substance" looming large in my mind. However to write this group off on a single play through would be unjust, as I have discovered.

Combining beautiful pop melodies with some dark electro, layers of looping strings and programmed beats that range from epic thunderous volleys to nicely laid back hip hop, this album is massively infectious, slowly growing on you, and rewarding repeated listening with new discoveries in each of it's 11 tracks.

Stand out tracks "Operated On", "Evil Has Never"and "We Can't Go Wrong" perfectly showcase a band with massive potential, and are among the best tracks I've heard from any band recently, never mind on a debut release.

In short, a powerful debut from a band who show massive promise.

Some of the music that is coming out of the indie/alternative music scene at the moment is atrotious, so it's a breath of fresh air for someone like Union Of Knives to come out of the corner and introduce themselves and their wonderful debut album, "Violence and Birdsong".

It fuses electronica with rock, something that an average band would get slaghtered for, but this really works. From opening track, "Opposite Direction", to closer "You Better Keep Me", there is not one bad track, never a dull moment on the album, and there are certainly some brilliant ones to.

"I Decline", in my opinion, is the best track of 2006. It's drum beats are instantly catchy and make a great background for the heavy bass and the soothing vocals. "No more fighting/no more lies" are words that are sung by lead singer Chris Gordon, and it stays in your head from the first listen. And there is never a moment that you lose concentration when listening to "Operated On", it's a song that you become familar with, and fall in love with. It's not a summer record, but it somehow sets the scene for your whole year.

They are obviously a heavy influenced band. For starters, you can hear a bit of Massive Attack in every single track on this album. And it also reminds you of the likes of late Radiohead and Sigur Ros. "Go Back To School" gives you that reminder of Radiohead with it's almost "Talk Show Host" guitar riffs in the background, but then enter the incredible beats and synthesizers, it's a stadium record played by a band that deserve to play in stadiums, and if they keep at the good work, they'll get there in no time.

There is not one band around at the moment, apart from Guillemots possibly, that has as much potential as Union of Knives.

Union Of Knives' debut album is great listening both for electro and rock fans, there are even some pleasant vocal melodies over all the raucous guitars and drums.

The drums provide momentum while the guitars and synths create an atmospheric sound.

i like it, in fact i'll even go so far as saying i like it a lot! if you're a fan of Massive Attack and even Radiohead this is a great listen, there's even a hint of zero seven.

Buy It!!!!
