This album always gets put down. No Steve Walsh , too religious etc etc. I love Steve and i hate religion (all of it) but it does not affect my enjoyment of one of the best melodic rock albums I've ever heard. The production is superb , the songs are superb. There is less progressive leanings of the earlier Kansas work but this album is very varied. If you judge it on it's own merits and don't compare it to Leftoverture etc etc and if you love melodic rock and AOR there's a good chance you'll love this. There are some religious lyrics but they are just one man's view. I love the band Black Widow and they sing about the devil and i don't like him either. Listen to the music , it's great.

Yes they do bludgeon 18 Sep 2011
By DKDC
Format:Audio CD
Amazon review says they have very spiritual lyrics but they don't attempt to bludgeon you. Well, they do - it is a very evangelical album - you must choose Christ, etc. But I always appreciated the honesty and forthrightness. Of course I have always considered myself a Christian - so I would not be offended.

Still - a great great album for it's time, especially for a Christian just getting into rock again after some years on evangelical island.

But, do they bludgeon? Read for yourself.

Underneath the sky of blue, it's a time of choosing
Everybody's holding on, to what they're losing
But it all works out okay, if you give your life away
To the one who's holding fast, it's a promise that will last

[Chorus]
You're caught in a crossfire
Of a greater love than man has ever known
Caught in a crossfire
And you've got to choose which way you're gonna go
Caught in a crossfire
In a world of darkness turn to the light

Time's disappearing, all that you're fearing
Dreamers awaken, chances are taken away

There isn't any in-between, there's no escaping
If you step across the line, it's illuminating
And the words are clear and true
And they all were meant for you
For you harvest what you sow, so where you gonna go

[Chorus]

There's no pretending no other ending
All is forgiven, if you are living anew

Everybody faces it, now or later
You can't get around it, 'cause it's human nature
And deep within the hardest heart
There is something there that knows
There's a hunger life can never fill
'Til you face the one who rose

[Chorus]

Time's disappearing, all that you're fearing
Dreamers awaken, chances are taken
There's no pretending no other ending
All is forgiven, if you are living anew, living anew

I think this is one of the most "buttonhole-ing" songs on the disc but also look up the lyrics to Borderline.

Great disc none the less. Would sold a lot more had it not been so Christian.

I have recently started to listern to Kansas via albums Leftoverture, Point Of No Return, The Essential Kansas and the live recording Two For The Show.
It has taken me sometime to warm to their type of rock music which is often keyboard driven with guitars, strong lead vocals, harmonies and excellent violin playing.
I understand that in the early 1980s Kerry Livgren embraced Christianity and other band members did the same or were not adverse to Kerry's faith affecting their work.
However lead singer, Steve Walsh, decided this was not for him.
To me Vinyl Confessions presents a Kansas with more substance, however the album does not take a heavy approach due to their new found beliefs.
So their original strengths remain plus some deeper spiritual truths.
Outstanding track is the closer, Crossfire.
Like a number of Kansas albums this one awaits remastering and bonus tracks would also be welcome !
