The only reason i havent given this all five stars is because i am being very picky. the first three lps (with the possible exception of parts of side two of neu! 2 just because it gets a bit silly after 40 years) are utterly essential and no home should be without them. my only minor misgiving is that the exclusion of the Live 72LP issued by Dinger on the japanese capt trips label (rehearsals really) and the few other live tracks that have come out from actual gigs via some of the private CD-R releases of other musicians involved then, make this less than complete - although the live stuff here does give a good indication of what those other releases sound like and why they are not, actually, essential anyway... The 80s NEU! never was an essential addition and although this version beats the Dinger approved Jap release mix-wise (I think), it will always be the first three LPs that really astound. get them even if you have to sell all your other records! That said the live streams that are around of the recent HalloGallo 2010 gigs with rother and steve shelley are brilliant and really do capture much of what was great way back when I first heard them, out of my mind on LSD in an incense soaked red-lit basement with several young ladies from croydon. NEU! influenced everybody.... I recall John Peel being a big fan, I wonder if they ever did a session for him? I remember him talking about rothers green hair - a big deal back in 72!!!! I have loved this band for 40 years and anytime i played them to someone new they always said "my god what is this? it's great!" You will too...... buy.

Listen to this band if you want to see how David Bowie, Lou Reed, Joy Division and Public Image Limited were imitators, not innovators - you will hear the feedback hailstorm of Metal Machine Music, the white noise of Station To Station and the reverb drum stomp of Public Image only years before those records came out.

NEU! 4 Sep 2011
By Sergio Flores - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Vinyl Verified Purchase
The legend, the myth, complete. The group that inspired Thom Yorke and David Bowie, the way that they should be remembered. I had the opportunity to see HalloGallo being played live in Mexico City, an opportunity to see the half of this huge german icon, and I was amazed. But their is a formula behind it all. It starts with some noise, a beat, a simple beat appears, and suddenly everybody feels like dancing. People that are half my age start dancing to stuff that has no name, no lyrics, just pure motorik beat. But not this stuff. This was the reinvention of Rock. And it was very serious, they weren't fooling around. And their very last and posthomous attempt to explore into groundbreaking music is included. The great masters are here, showing their inventiveness even when sometimes they made mistakes. Surely you've forgiven worst mistakes in order to follow the art you love.
