At time of writing I see two reviews of this box set - and I held off purchasing based on those reviews. However, like any other long term Can fan, the resistance to take the plunge diminished and I bought it - and when I opened it up I was pleasantly surprised!

As with all these reviews, let me give you my credentials.
My first Can album was the UK vinyl version of Tago Mago on UA which had the fold-out black / live photo album cover - which I bought at time of original release. I've got all the UA / Harvest originals (eg Ege Bamyasi with lyrics on inner sleeve). I have most of the "re-issues" (many on coloured vinyl). And I have the mini-LP Jap replicas (including the promo box, shaped shaped like a tin can based on Ege Bamyasi, where they included replicas of UK versions of Tago Mago and Soundtracks sleeves). I've had (and sold) the original CD issues - replaced by the set of remastered ones. Finally, got the VHS and DVD version of Can Box.
I love the band, I love collecting their stuff.

So two hats - as a collector & opinion on music contained.

As a collector;

So, my first surprise is that each title has inner sleeves (not normally seen in recent "reissues") - these inner sleeves are in the style of the recent re-issue CD booklets - contemporary photos and sleeve notes - plus relevant memorabilia. So a nice touch is that Unlimited Edition has a replicated version of the original Limited Edition Sleeve (the rodent sleeve). Tago Mago makes reference to the UK version of the sleeve (a photo, not replicated). I hadn't expected this. So not an absolute replication of the original releases, but a nice touch. (pity they didn't do the Ege Bamyasi lyrics, that wouldn't have been too hard...

This is a vinyl boxset of all their official albums wonderfully produced with 1 rare live album from 1975 in exactly replicated covers & various emphemera including posters & book which has great photos of the band & pertinent information.

First the good news, you will get to own everything that the best experimental rock band in the world (at least from 1968-1979) officially issued. If like me you had most of the original vinyl albums but for some reason lost them (mine were destroyed in an uninsured house fire) then this is the perfect opportunity for the Can fan to own them again. Next having the rare live album is a delight especially seeing to my knowledge Bel Air the side long ambient track from Future Days has never been available in any form live before. This & the side long excellent improvision when Can were still firing on all cylindars creatively is the real interest of the box set.
Next, unfortunately is the negative aspect of the review & why only 4 instead of a 5 star rating. a) the price is very hefty because if you are a Can fan i would imagine that you would almost certainly have all the vinyl albums besides having them on the original and then remastered cd's & also any bootlegs you can get your hands on. So essentialy it is a lot of money for 1 unreleased album. If they had included Prehistoric Future (cleaned up production wise from their first 1968 live session) & say 1 more album of studio outakes (which there are numerous references to the best of course being the latest Lost Tapes release where there was mention of many more hours of music Irmin & Juno sifted through) i think it would be more enticing for the serious Can Fan because lets face it no one new to Can would probably shell out this money.

Firstly let me say this.I kind of knew what I was getting into when I pre-ordered my copy.So I'm not moaning about the fact that I now own it.Also I knew I was buying music I already had.Not the first time I've done that,and I'm sure the same can be said for many of us.As a committed Can fan I already had all the albums in this collection(bar the live album)on original vinyls.So I realised I was paying £300 for basically the box,book and posters! However,as a die-hard fan I am sure many others will be considering doing the same.STOP!!!!! Don't do it.Hold on to your money friends.Why? I'll tell you why.Until you have forked out your £300 or more(£300 was the cheapest I could find it)you have no way of knowing the quality,or lack of in the materials used.For the money this box set defines the word 'shoddy'.The linen covered box is fine,no problems.However,the contents inside(not the music)are a joke! Let's start with the so called 'book'.It's not a book,it's a 12 page booklet.As stated I knew that it was only going to be 12 pages but for this money you expect top grade paper quality not the nasty cheap stuff used here.On second thoughts for this kind of cash I would expect a proper 'hard bound' top quality glossy paper book!

Next,the 'posters'.Five of them.But again very cheap grade paper has been used.They are dull and uninspiring to say the least.

The biggest shock and disappointment is the replica sleeves.Again cheap and horrible.The lowest grade card has been used and the photos used are facsimiles only.No care has been taken at all.Surely the people involved in this(those at Spoon,the surviving band members or whoever)could have obtained licences to use the original artwork and photographs to better advantage?

HASH(0x92e5e900) out of 5 stars Can vinyl boxset, A Timeless band's back catalogue with 1 new rare live addition 28 Jan. 2014
By stan menshic - Published on Amazon.com

This is a vinyl boxset of all their official albums wonderfully produced with 1 rare live album from 1975 in exactly replicated covers (but rather thin cardboard) & various emphemera including posters & book which has great photos of the band & pertinent information.

As for the emphemera its ok but i personally preferred the Immersion edition of Pink Floyds 'Dark side of the Moon' cause at least you got a nice scarf you could wear & here was the perfect opportunity to include a Can tee shirt to hopefully advertise the band. Anyway 95% of this box set is absolutely wonderful & brilliantly innovative music & for me (as i did lose all my vinyl & only replaced a few albums) a must have puchase from this truly inspiring & timeless band.
