Can a book about vintage equipment become obsolete? To my surprise it can! The book gives a picture of the vintage synthesizer scene of more than a decade ago. Many interesting synths have since come and gone again.

In fact many of the coveted vintage synths has been recreated since. Either in the form of soft synths, hardware replicas or as genuine reissues. For instance Moog is producing their analogues again.

The book has been revised with new material for 2nd. edition (in 2000), but existing aticles (from 1993) seems untouched.

The editing leaves much to be desired. The book is more a collection of magazine articles rather than a genuine work. I could have done the editing much better myself! Finally the pictures are almost exclusively black-and-white instead of coulour. And many are very dark.

A book with many weak points, but still with enough interesting parts to be considered a fair buy, though.

I've worn out 3 copies of this book in the last decade. Its an AMAZING book if you're a synth geek like me! My favorite one. In depth history about all the nutty synthesizer pioneers and their ups and downs.. Very very fascinating. Amazing photos and references if you're ever gonna step into the addictive world vintage synthesizers.

This is a good book with much information to satisfy those looking for some retro information. The chapters cover analog, digital and modular synths, with another chapter dedicated to specific manufacturers. The authors have provided technical details about the synths featured, "now and then" price comparisons and the odd anecdotal story. All in all if you have any interest in this field then you really should check this book out as it has a lot to offer. Recommended.

Covers the most important vintage synths history, many I didn't know they existed.
It's nice to read the creators comments about those synths, business highs and falls of important brands, like ARP and many others are also mentioned.
This book is a good candidate to a freak's living room library.

Every synth nerd should have this book. It gives a fascinating history of many of the classic synths we all know and love, as well as a general overview of synthesis itself.
