Tracy Tolkien clearly knows her subject and many of us know that she also owns a delightful shop. If you are seeking a good introduction and possible reference source for vintage style, then this book would be wonderful. It contains some lovely commissioned and stock photographs of clothes, periods, accessories and outfits on mannequins.
It is a lovely glossy hardback book which will always be an attractive addition to either library or coffee table. My only reservations were that my main interest of the 1940s is given scant attention and I think the lack of breadth is the main flaw of the book. Tolkien does not cover Victorian, Edwardian or the inter-war years in any depth and also gives approximately 2 pages to the Second World War period, which I think is a great shame.
If you are looking for an indispensable fashion sourcebook, this is not it - well, not on its own anyway. This is a wonderful addition to your sourcebook collection and would prove useful for ideas, details and moving on to further research, purchasing and so forth.
Well recommended, but not if you are seeking lots of diagrams, patterns or text (especially on pre-1940s). It's a glossy, well-written introduction... not a fashion "encyclopaedia"!
