When I first opened this book, it was with concern that the text may not be particularly well translated for English speaking readers; however the author has wisely employed the services of "The American from Paris" to ensure each chapter is clear and concise. There is also an interesting forward from Dan Gurney and Jim Hall.
The flavour of this book is clearly aimed at the American "Golden Era" of slot car racing in the 60's and to this end, I think it works extremely well. It is also packed with full colour pictures of slot cars, dating from as far back as 1938, through to the late 1960's.
For me, this book serves as a vital reference to the world of American 1/24 & 1/32 slot racing design & development, as well as the marketing trends and consequent rarity value of some of these models. All the major manufacturers of that era are given a mention, from AMT to Veco (oh yes, and Scalextric!). And at the end, there is even an Epilogue covering the current trends and possible future of this hobby, including brief references to some of today's high fliers such as Ninco and Fly.
If you're looking for a complete guide to slot cars, then this may not be for you. However, this book will undoubtedly become a collectors item in its own right and together with other books on this subject, including Roger Gillham's 'Scalextric - Cars and Equipment of Past & Present' and Roger Greenslade's 'History of Electric Model Roads and Racetracks', will provide an invaluable addition to any "Slot Head's" reference library.
