Over the last 20 years Michael Bolton has written for some of the finest (Cher, Barbara Striesand, Kiss, The Pointer Sisters, Kenny Rogers), so it is fitting that on his latest release; the first for his own label (Passion Studios), Michael Bolton interprets and makes his own, songs that were made classics by legends such as Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, Ray Charles.
Unfortunately, today it does seem the norm for people to produce an album of standards and it is easy to do just that (Westlife, Michael Buble, Jamie Callum, Robbie Williams). However, the key is to add something different and give a fresh, just owned/sung feeling to a song that is, in some cases, 60 years old.
On Vintage, Michael Bolton does exactly that. For a man who has sold upward of 70million albums worldwide, over a career that has so far spanned 30 years, this latest project, is one of his best. Produced and arranged with Bolton, the album is breathtaking from the opening notes of The Very Thought Of You, through to a soul/gospel-infused God Bless The Child, which you can imagine Ray Charles being very proud of.
Bolton's voice is relaxed, yet full of power and raw emotion. The danger on these songs is to produce what has gone before. Can you tell the difference between Robbie Williams' versions or the originals? Probably not, as the production is geared to that to appeal to a wide wide audience (fans of the artist and of the originals). On Vintage, Michael Bolton let's his creativity flow and you can feel his vocals wrapping themselves around the lyrics as if he'd just written them himself and we were hearing the songs for the first time.
His versions of 'All The Way', 'If I Could', 'When I Fall In Love', 'You Don't Know Me', 'Smile', 'At Last', are Timeless. Bolton's performance is full of warmth, tenderness, power and emotion that will leave you wanting more. You can almost hear the composers thinking this is what I heard when I wrote this.
Forget what's out there for the Christmas markets and is doing well commercially, stick your music head on and buy the only true album that does these great songs the justice they deserve.
