Don't be led astray by the title of this book, or the fact that the first chapter is called "English Cottage". The vintage cottages in this book are scattered over the United States, and "English Cottage" is the name of a 1925 timber building in California. This book is one of those which is like a series of magazine articles, each featuring a different cottage with a different style; the text basically describes what we see in the photo and adds a bit of relatively uninteresting geographical and biographical background. As one might expect, the list of "useful addresses" at the back is much less useful if you are a UK reader.
Having said that, this is a refreshing glimpse of more characterful American homes, and many of the gardens and interiors featured are charmingly different. There is rather more about the owners and their dogs than I really want to know; one wonders if, as is so often the case, the people and houses featured are clients of the author, to be indulged and flattered. But an English reader can be inspired and learn things from this book, even if they are not the things you initially expected. I was sent it as a gift by someone who'd ordered it online; I think they thought it was something completely different. Whether you buy it depends really on if you are happy to pay out for a book which is, predominantly, what I believe our transatlantic colleagues call "eye candy".
