Of all the various dances from the Roaring Twenties, it's the Charleston which has come to epitomise the era. It was played at a fast pace, in a syncopated 4/4 time, and danced solo on the spot with exaggerated arm and leg movements. This compilation favours American recordings (one of which is Black Bottom, which was a different dance) and largely avoids duplication with other similar-based reissues. I'm not convinced that everything comes within the ambit of the title, but no matter, there are some splendid numbers here, from some of the top bands of the period. As regards the British dance bands, a couple of them are rarities, namely Chili Bom Bom by Nat Star, and My Cutie's Due at Two-to-Two Today by Don Parker. Remastering is excellent and there's an informative liner note by Peter Dempsey.

This latest themed compilation is a delight and will get regular playing in our house. The running time of approx 73 minutes ensures that the atmosphere of the twenties is fully explored and a good mix of bands are included. As with all Bygone Days releases you get attractive packaging great sound transfers and an informative liner note and quite big print this time around too. This is a wonderful mix of mainly American bands but including some English recording too.

Kicking off with the biggest hit The Charleston here is music which will always be in vogue.
And like virtually all popular music its Afro-American in origin.Written by pianist James P Johnson and named for a town in Carolina the song was first performed in an all black Broadway stage show in 1923 thus kicking the whole thing off.The first recorded version was by Elizabeth Welch before Paul Whiteman the self styled King Of Jazz moved in.
Among the many rare items here is the Nat Star Parlophone Dance Ork,a British unit which featured an early Ted Heath with a version of Chili Bom Bom
There are dozens of these comps many were deleted when the labels went out of business but others would follow.
This one avoids too much duplication with other sets

I'm glad to state that I enjoyed all tracks on this sublime collection and my feet were constantly wagging in rhythm to the tunes being played. A lot of these recordings reminded me of the music that I heard when watching the comedies of Laurel and Hardy as a child. So you could say that these original recordings of the 1920's took me back to my nostalgic past of the 1970's watching Stan and Ollie. I'm thinking of doing something at Christmas with a 20's theme and this cd with a couple of others will aid me in whatever I do. But I digress...

I have to say that as much as I enjoyed the opening track "Charleston", I thought it would have been better without the strange vocal. Does another purely instrumental version exist? And I hope I haven't commited sacrilege by posing the question.

Among the instrumental tracks there are some charming vocal additions; "Don't Bring Lulu, My Cuties's Due at Two Today, I'd Rather Charleston, Lucky Day, The Blue Room" and "Because My Baby Don't Mean Maybe Now" in particular are simply exquisite.

A passing comment on the superb production on this disc from Bygone Days. The clarity of the instruments and vocals is stunning when you consider that these original recordings are nearing 90 years old. You can hear the background hiss on some of the tunes which add to the authenticity of these recordings, but there are no crackles - every track plays smooth.

If you want something different to add to your collection then treat yourself to music from another time, and buy this musical treat. I'm off to buy a Fedora...

I bought this for the Jay Whidden track which I've had on 78 (80 actually, it's Columbia) for a long time. I need to get my disc playing gear back in operation......
There are some great tracks on this CD, some tunes well known others gradually fading into the past along with the era that spawned them. I was a child of the '60s when there was a revival of interest in the music of the 20s - TV series like "The Roaring 20s" stars like Dorothy Provine - bands like the Temperance Seven, the Alberts... and of course the resurgence of Trad Jazz....
As I grew I went hunting out the original discs, common then and cheap as their original owners passed (them) on....
I can see this CD kindling an interest in the upbeat and enlivening music of those days.
I do wonder whether the instrumental "Black Bottom" was chosen because the lyrics of that song (certainly the vocal intro of another version I have on shellac) wouldn't go down too well these racially aware days.
Now lets have a disc devoted to those novelty numbers! (I recall a 45rpm single by Jimmy Edwards in Pa Glum persona of "I've Never Seen A Straight Banana" as well as a 78rpm version....)

By this CD. It's cheap and very very entertaining. Try Aerobics to it....

This abounds in atmosphere, a very nostalgic and authentic sound, complete with the whispery, crackling background of the original recording - ideal for 1920s parties, performances or simply for soaking up the feel of the period.
