Vinland the Dream is a collection of short stories based on the theme of alternative timelines past and future. The book manages to portray events as they might have been had chance taken a different direction. The stories maintain the realism displayed in the Mars trilogy, the ultimate in future historical vision. As ever Robinson's characters are vivid and deep thinking, although the format of the book intrinsically means they are not as fully developed as in longer works. The style of the book is wonderfully detailed and very enjoyable. This is a great addition to any Science Fiction collection.
This is a book of short stories by the author of "Red Mars" and "the Years of Rice and Salt". Really worth reading if you liked his major novels. The title story may be the best one: an archaeologist discovers that the proofs of the Viking's travel to the New World, the artifacts found in L'Anse of Meadows in Newfoundland, are forgeries. We are confronted with the strange nostalgia of loosing an important fragment of what we thought was our History.
