More About the Author

Alexandre Dumas was born in 1802 at Villers-Cotterêts. His father, the illegitimate son of a marquis, was a general in the Revolutionary armies, but died when Dumas was only four. He was brought up in straitened circumstances and received very little education. He joined the household of the future king, Louis-Philippe, and began reading voraciously. Later he entered the cénacle of Charles Nodier and started writing.

In 1829 the production of his play, Henri III et sa Cour, heralded twenty years of successful playwriting. In 1839 he turned his attention to writing historical novels, often using collaborators such as Auguste Maquet to suggest plots or historical background. His most successful novels are The Count of Monte Cristo, which appeared during 1844-5, and The Three Musketeers, published in 1844. Other novels deal with the wars of religion and the Revolution. Dumas wrote many of these for the newspapers, often in daily instalments, marshalling his formidable energies to produce ever more in order to pay off his debts. In addition, he wrote travel books, children's stories and his Mémoires which describe most amusingly his early life, his entry into Parisian literary circles and the 1830 Revolution. He died in 1870.

4.0 out of 5 stars An engrossing read 28 Jun. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I read this immediately after "Les trois mousquetaires", so was struck by the evolution of the four principal characters, particularly Athos who seems to have lost some his drive and initiative, and D'Artagnan who has found his. As ever, the historical setting and characters add an interesting backdrop (although apparently not historically accurate, I wouldn't know), and unlikely adventures and ingenious twists abound. There is an interesting split of the four friends into two, sometimes competing, factions, which I found odd at first, but which adds interest to the various plots and sub-plots. All in all a good read, and I will shortly embark on the final part of the trilogy, "Le Vicomte de Bragellone".

4.0 out of 5 stars More good fun 4 Jan. 2015

Did you realise D'Artagnan was actually based on historical figure? Me neither - surprisingly I got that from science fiction writer Neal Stephenson's 'Quicksilver" so I checked it out. M Treville likewise. The names of Porthos, Athos & Aramis are taken from 3 similarly named characters - all nephews of M Treville - but their careers are completely different. Treville, Richelieu & Louis XIII are all now dead, while Louis XIV is still a minor. Mazarin is sharing Anne of Austria's bed. D'Artagnan is still a musketeer, Athos retired to his estate, Aramis in the church, Porthos now a rich widower. The story is set at the time of "La Fronde" and also deals with the death of Charles I

(Accents fine in my copy)

This sequel of the three musketeers is as much of a classic and is as enjoyable to read. These are books that any person who enjoys historic novels or any child who likes adventures should have read.

Cette edition manque les accents. This edition is missing the accents on the vowels. Very distracting and difficult to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lesser-known masterpiece, but a masterpiece nonetheless 24 Mar. 2012
By Hugo Dart - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
The sequel to Dumas's classic "The Three Musketeers" is a classic in its own right. The author's brilliant prose is every bit as sharp, his writing just as able to bring smiles and tears to the reader.

It is a crime that this book has been read by so few people, comparatively speaking. It makes the most wonderful gift to any lover of literature.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just to offset the incorrect review about this edition's lacking accents 11 April 2011

Format:Mass Market Paperback
This is a very nice Garnier Flammarion two-volume pocket paperback set of Vingt ans apres.

It does not lack accents. (The other comment must pertain to another edition.) It is very nicely printed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic sequel 29 May 2013
By Robert J. Edmonson - Published on

If you loved LES TROIS MOUSQUETAIRES, you'll like the next book in the series, set at the time of La Fronde rebellion. In this sequel the son of the evil villain from the first book seeks revenge for his mother's death. The infamous Mazarini maintains the queen's favor. Dartagnan and friends attempt to save England's Charles I from execution. Lots of twists and turns, and a good, challenging read for those whose native language is not French.

Bon, j'avoue que j'ai adore Vingt Ans Apres, Dumas peut etre hilarant et ce Gascon fort divertissant. Le format du ebook est un peu rudimentaire cependant...
