Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

In The Da Vinci Code, Dan Brown masterfully concocts an intelligent and lucid thriller that marries the gusto of an international murder mystery with a collection of fascinating esoterica culled from 2,000 years of Western history.

A murder in the silent after-hours halls of the Louvre reveals a sinister plot to uncover a secret that has been protected by a clandestine society since the days of Christ. The victim is a high-ranking agent of this ancient society who, in the moments before his death, manages to leave gruesome clues at the scene that only his daughter, noted cryptographer Sophie Neveu, and Robert Langdon, a famed symbologist, can untangle. The duo become both suspects and detectives searching for not only Neveu's father's murderer but also the stunning secret of the ages he was charged to protect. Mere steps ahead of the authorities and the deadly competition, Neveu and Langdon embark on a breathless flight through France, England and history itself.

Brown has created a page-turning thriller that also provides an amazing interpretation of Western history. Brown's hero and heroine embark on a lofty and intriguing exploration of some of Western culture's greatest mysteries--from the nature of the Mona Lisa's smile to the secret of the Holy Grail. Though some will quibble with the veracity of Brown's conjectures, therein lies the fun. The Da Vinci Code is an enthralling read that provides rich food for thought. --Jeremy Pugh, Amazon.com

Very enjoyable. However it should be noted that this is an abridged version. It dosen't tell you that in the details.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant edited down reading from the book, 11 Sep 2007
This review is from: The Da Vinci Code (Audio CD)
I had avoided Dan Browns novels till now due to all the hype that has surrounded them. Then by chance I came across the 17hour(14 CD) un-abridged version in my local library, and decided to find out what all the fuss was about.

CD ONE, five minutes in, and I'm hooked.
If the un-abridged version had been available on amazon I would have have gone for that, but its not and although I was not sure how the abridged 6hr 40mins version would work out, for around £1.60 plus, you would be daft not to give it a go.

I'm glad I did as it is just edited down from the 17 hour recording and well edited, and having heard both, just as good. The only problem is once you start listening you don't want to stop.

I really DO recommend this recording to anyone who knows the book and wants it for car journeys, or if like me you just wanted to find out what the fuss was about.

Believe me it's worth your time. But a warning, you will probably end up buying the book. You can get the hardback version for less than a pound + p&p here on Amazon. I've ordered mine!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly entertaining thriller, 11 May 2004
By
This review is from: The Da Vinci Code (Paperback)
The Da Vinci Code sees Robert Langdon (essentially a modern day Indiana Jones) called to duty once again to assist in international events due to his knowledge of religious symbolism (much the same start as in Angels and Demons). The book takes us on a whirlwind journey across Europe with plenty of conspiracy, code-breaking, treasure-seeking and not a few longing stares between the male and female leads.

It is unfair to criticise the book's lack of character development, as with Brown's other work the narrative is realtime and the events are over in 24 hours (more or less), and it is just silly to claim that the author hasn't got his facts right about The Priory of Sion or The Knights Templar as these entities in themselves are pretty contentious issues amongst historians.

The book is however highly entertaining, gripping stuff. It is an undeniably great story with likeable characters and plenty of twists to keep you guessing to the end. I feel sorry for you if you're too stuffy to enjoy it!
