Claude Sautet is my all time French director. He is undoubtedly one of France's most important, influential, humanist film makers. Sadly, like many of his contemporaries, such as Agnès Varda, Michel Deville, Sautet's cinematic contributions are sometimes forgotten. His early films have never been released on DVD for the British audience in UK.
In his career, he made the classiest, most romantic, elegant and sophisticated films such as Les choses de la vie (beautiful, haunting theme composed by Philippe Sarde CD is available on Amazon) and Cesar & Rosalie (starring with Yves Montand and Romy Scheider)
I can't imagine WHY there hasn't been a collection of Claude Sautet DVD films released in a box set like Eric Rohmer's or Louis Malle's films. Most of Sautet films are not available to buy on DVD. It is such a big disappointment that his beautiful films are so much under-appreciated and almost forgotten in the history of French Cinema.
Sautet's films explore one of his favourite themes - the strength of friendship in relation to the ephemeral nature of male-female romantic relationships. He is fascinated by the idea of friendship and telling a story about life/relationship challenges.
Vincent, Paul, François, et les Autres is one of Sautet's most acclaimed films. It explores the importance of friendship in our lives. It's about four middle-class men meet in the country every weekend mainly to discuss their lives, to leisurely dine, walk through the fields, play sports, and above all, enjoy each other's company.
One thing that I most admire in Sautet's film is his refined cinemagraphy and his perpetual strive for perfection, picturesque framing and attention to details, capturing every reflection, scenery, nuance, and expression. His films concentrate on intelligent, bourgeois, cultured protagonists who frequently fail to own up to their desires. If the novelist, Henry James was still alive, I think Claude Sautet would be the only director he would watch.
Note: There are a lot of extras including the interviews with the actors from the film. However, there is no English subtitle (but the sound of the actors' voices had been dubbed in American English).
Recommendation: Cesar & Rosalie, Les Choses de La Vie, [Music] Le Cinema De Claude Sautet, composed by Philippe Sarde
