this is the most beautiful feelgood album to have ever graced my ears. It's a fantastic summertime, sitting in the garden, drinking cold beers, sliding down the blue tarpaulin kind of album. i can't recommend it enough.

Whilst I still have my original CD copy of this album, I've bought this, the 'expanded version', for the extra, live versions of a number of the album's tracks. Indeed, at the time of writing this review (01/02/2012), Amazon don't state this matter in their product review (i.e. that it's expanded) - so I thought that I'd mention it here!

The album? Well, yes, this is all a sublime fusion of folk in the style of Nick Drake, John Martyn, Bill Fay, and so on - so, why is this "A lost 'folk mod' classic"? Well, Deighton - after fronting the Acid Jazz rock/soul hybrid that was Mother Earth (with whom Paul Weller guested) - launched his solo career with this and then went on to join the Modfather's band around the time of "Heavy Soul". So, roll on the summer, and roll on (please, People Tree!) similar expanded reissues of all of Deighton's output.

Matts first album, since his Acid Jazz days with Mother Earth, and what suberb, beautiful album it is too. A soulful mix of folky, summer grooves, slightly distancing himself from his funky roots but the tunes are brilliant and mellow, perfect for that summer afternoon..catch him live if you can.

Relaxed, mellow and original, but maintains a Mother Earth / Acid Jazz familiarity. 5 years old but shows no sign of aging.
Recommended, his best ablbum to date.

Most recently, Matt Deighton has been topping up his Acid Jazz pension by bashing out power chords in a Noel Gallagher-less Oasis. But when he picked up his acoustic for 'Villager', he delivered a highly-listenable album of gentle English acousticana. Backed by a great band, Deighton's lyrical, folk-tinged songs have drawn many comparisons with Nick Drake; in this case warranted. The opener, 'Good for me' has great drive and energy with not an amp in sight, while slower numbers such as 'Pure English Honey' are just that; soft, smooth, sweet yet never cloying and thoroughly palatable. Laurie Lee on a little silver disc...
