Alice (Sophie Ward) and Martin (Nathaniel Parker) have just moved from the big city to their dream house in a quaint village. Alice finds the adjustment to village life difficult and is depressed and unsatisfied with her mama's boy husband. Things get even worse when a pushy socialite (Kerry Fox) seems to make a play for Martin, when in fact, she's attracted to someone else.

The story is a good one, but I didn't like any of the actors; to me, they were bland and boring with the exception of the wonderful Claire Bloom who plays Martin's overbearing mother. Sophie Ward's Alice is too colorless and dull to care about and she conjured up no romantic sparks. Kerry Fox overacts constantly, always making loud, pleading speeches when a whispered one would be better. I didn't like her so the story fell flat.

This BBC movie takes a good look at life in a village where everyone knows everything about everybody - not a good place to carry on a lesbian love affair. It's an acceptable but lacklustre film that could have been better with a stronger cast.

Although it doesn't really reflect the whole content of the book, it does a good job for a screen version. The end is nothing like the optimistic conclusions and future lifestyle suggested by Trollope. I will still recommend it to those of us who like a good gay Aga Saga, it's a lovely film.

Having already read the book I was wary of this video adaptation of A Village Affair, but I was not disappointed. It delicately traces the taboo relationship of Clodagh and Alice in an idyllic rural environ. I completely felt every moment of the film - I was smiling to myself one moment and then crying buckets the next. Buy it especially if you're looking for a good lesbian love story!

This is a ground breaking drama which deals with lesbianism in a small British village. The cast is stellar with Sophie Ward, Kerry Fox, Nathanial Parker, and the great actresses Barbara Jefford and Claire Bloom. "A Village Affair" is truly a great drama which has aged like fine wine. Don't pass this DVD. It is superb and very realistic. Great direction, acting, and a great film. I highly recommend it.

The "grown up" approach to a lesbian love affair is something that is missing from most films of this genre. The secret lives of people in an English village, known by all apart from those closest, is fabulouusly highlighted. There are fabulous performances by some of the lesser supporting actors, and a strong lead from Sophie Ward. If you are tired of soft "hollywood" endings and seek more reality, you could do a lot worse than viewing this film.

I love Joanna Trollope's books and far too few of them have been made into films. I already have The Rector's Wife but struggled to track down A Village Affair. Found at last on Amazon. Very pricey but worth it.

Pastoral pursuits turn torrid in rural England. However, the film script pales in comparison with the much discussed volte-face of one of the leading actresses.
