5.0 out of 5 stars Another Carl St Clair winner, 20 May 2008
This is not Villa-Lobos' easiest symphony but this recording stands well above the competition.

It was written for the 400th Anniversary of Sao Paolo and though the text is religious the intent and music are programmatic. A few critics have claimed it is better described as a cantata and perhaps they are right: it has little structurally in common with Villa-Lobos other symphonies.

It is worth considering earlier recordings - in particular, their durtion:

1. Gisèle Ben-Dor and the Santa Barbara Symphony Orchestra. (57 minutes).

A brave try but I wasn't too impressed. The string tone sounds thin and too far back in the mix. The work sounds jumbled, a patchwork of styles and sounds. At this point I couldn't know whether it was Villa-Lobos or the performance - no score is available to me - but it didn't seem to work.

2. Pablo Perez with the Orquesta Sinfonica de Tenerife (67 minutes).

What's striking is the 10-minute longer duration. With easier tempi the work started to take shape - not that form became apparent as much as its episodic nature at the more relaxed pace. Variations in the texture (hence the atmosphere) were also more pronounced. Nice performance - the strings still came across thin but it was competent, becoming the preferred performance.

Now the Carl St Clair and, yes - better still. And longer still: 73 minutes.

The expansiveness seems to pay off. It coheres. The complexities of the score are apparent but not obtrusive in St Clair's hands. He handles the dynamics and balance more sensitively than the other conductors and the slower tempi allow the work to breathe. Add to that the clarity of texture and it's a beautiful work (if not strictly a symphony). Some of the muddy textures in the Ben-Dor now seem translucent and airy. The recording is excellent, the several choirs and soloists well balanced and at last the strings stand a chance. So, this takes first place.
