Charming,

This review is from: Villa-Lobos: Bachianas Brasileiras Nos. 1,2,5 & 9 (Audio CD)
This is a delightful CD and I can't do more than echo the previous reviewer.
The voice as an instrument is beautifully used and portrayed. Well worth buying just to hear. The only minor problem is that this CD is mono not stereo. You may find that (as I did) that disconnecting one loudspeaker provides a much more satisfactory listen. Your amp may have a balance control which will save you the bother of messing with speaker wires.

Villa-Lobos conducts Villa-Lobos,

This review is from: Villa-Lobos: Bachianas Brasileiras Nos. 1,2,5 & 9 (Audio CD)
We are fortunate indeed to live in times when we can listen to a top composer conducting his own work! Villa-Lobos brings such strength and power to each of these; one could lose oneself in listening. Victoria de los Angeles does the aria in Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5, and for this alone, it is worth buying this CD.

Heitor Villa-Lobos played cello in the opera and other symphony orchestras in Rio de Janeiro, where he was born and where he died in 1959. The cello therefore features prominently in these compositions. These pieces, taken from the set of nine Bachianas Brasileiras, are therefore 20th century compositions, but are among the century's more accessible compositions. All of the set are intended to reflect something of the baroque style in their structure but the rhythms and colour of Brazil in their orchestration. No.1 of the set (1930) is written for 8 cellos, and what a gorgeous sound they make! No.2 (1934) is a three-movement work for chamber orchestra and includes one of the composer's better-known pieces, `The Little Train of the Caipira', as its fourth movement. In No.5 we again have the lovely and quite unusual sound of the 8 cellos but this time backing the gorgeous voice of Victoria de los Angeles. The final two tracks have the Bachianas Brasileiras No.9 which exists in two versions - one is for a cappella choir and the other, recorded here, is for string orchestra. If you want an introduction to the music of Villa-Lobos, this is a good place to start. This disc is in mono and features the Orchestre National de la R.T.F. conducted by the composer.
