Product Description

Product Description

An outstanding collaboration between Russian virtuoso violinist Viktoria Mullova and top Italian baroque band Il Giardino Armonico, in five of the most virtuoso Vivaldi violin concertos. Working together for two years before this recording was made, it's thrilling, passionate, vibrant stuff which will make you sit up and listen with fresh ears. Already awarded Gramophone Editor's Choice (July 2005) this CD looks set to garner many more awards

BBC Review

It's impossible to find fault with this exceptional disc by Viktoria Mullova, which should satisfy fans of authentic Baroque performance as well as of contemporary violin playing.

Mullova plays her 'Jules Falk' Stradivarius, using gut strings tuned A=415 (standard tuning is A=440) and a baroque bow, and to this adds her incredible technique and Russian-schooled musical discipline (before she defected from the Soviet Union in 1983 she was a student of the formidable and brilliant Russian violinist Leonid Kogan) to successfully fuse these two very different worlds.

The range of bowing techniques she uses in these Vivaldi concertos produces a real feast of effects. The rapid-fire cadenzas of tracks 1 and 3 (the 'Grosso Mogul' concerto) are especially stunning in this respect, as are the fantastic closing stages of track 12.

Mullova also manages to sound completely natural and uncontrived in the complicated improvisatory passages - track 2 of the same concerto is a particularly good example of this. There are moments of huge delicacy and simplicity too, as can be heard in the wistful Andante to the 'Il Favorito' concerto (track 14), and this lighter touch acts as a perfect counterbalance to the gutsier, virtuosic playing of the Allegro movements.

Throughout these concertos Il Giardino Armonico support Mullova in every way. A well-established Baroque ensemble, led by recorder player Giovanni Antonini since 1989, they produce all kinds of different tone-colours and subtle bowing effects, and their playing is consistently rhythmical and exciting even in the softer passages (listen especially to track 3 and the breathtaking track 10).

Released on the relatively new independent record label Onyx, founded by Chris Craker of Sony/BMG and Paul Moseley, this disc is recorded quite close to the performers but is perfectly judged so that all the details are easily heard. Tastefully played and recorded, you can buy this CD with confidence.

Since having seen and heard Viktoria Mullova play the Chaconne by J.S.Bach in the international round-the-clock Bach jubileum concert on TV some ten years ago I have trusted Mullova more, when it comes to baroque music, than most other violinists not specialized in it. She plays most wonderfully here on this CD, too. Then there is Il Giardino Armonico enchanting me totally. The orchestra plays with a superb joy, energy and vivacity that hit me from the first bars and had me dancing on my chair when I first listened to this CD, and the fascination has continued and driven me to search for more recordings by them. How flat my words sound, compared to their playing. This is a record you want to hear over and over again. It makes your life feel lighter, and it makes you burst with joy to be able to share this delight with somebody dear.

If you needed any proof that Viktoria Mullova has returned from her brief sebatical in spectacular form - this new cd with Il Giardino Armonica is it! If you have never experienced Viktoria's incredible talent with the violin then you really are missing out.

This is an excellent disc of five of Vivaldi's violin concertos, superbly played by both soloist and orchestra. There is a huge amount of Vivaldi around, some of it very good and some of it very dull, and this really stands out from the crowd.

Viktoria Mullova is simply brilliant here. She is a superb violinist and her wonderful technique allows her to make even Vivaldi's most virtuosic passages sound natural and unstrained. She also has the insight and musicality to bring the pieces to life so that they aren't just lots and lots of notes over a pleasing harmonic backing, but really sound as though they mean something. Her playing in the slow movements is exceptionally good and genuinely affecting in places; no pyrotechnics, of course, but fabulous control, tone and emotional depth.

Il Giardino Armonico also play superbly. They are flexible and supple, with a fine judgement of mood ranging from the delicately tender to real, rollicking vigour, and there is no hint anywhere of the unengaged, metronomic tum-ti-tum stuff which makes some recordings of Vivaldi so tedious.

I would recommend this very warmly, even to Vivaldi sceptics. Mullova and the ensemble really do produce something special here and it's a pleasure from start to finish.

(I would also warmly recommend Mullova's disc of Vivaldi double concertos with Giuliano Carmignola, which is another real gem. Vivaldi: Concertos for two Violins )
