Product Description

The accepted history of the Vikings is of a band of blood-thirsty pirates raiding the peaceful monasteries of Christendom… and all of it is completely true. The Vikings took no prisoners, relished cruel retribution and prided themselves as warriors… But this is only a small part of the story. The Vikings themselves did not write their history… so we have to discover it. Presented by Neil Oliver we see the Vikings from their point of view, which reveals an extraordinary story of a people who came back from the brink of destruction and in the course of 200 years reached around a quarter of the globe and built an empire.

Product Description

History sees the Vikings as a band of bloodthirsty pirates, raiding peaceful Christian monasteries... and it's true. The Vikings took no prisoners, relished cruel retribution and prided themselves as fierce warriors. But their prowess in battle is only the start of the story. Going on the trail of the real Vikings this series reveals an extraordinary story of a people who, from the brink of destruction, built an empire reaching around a quarter of the globe. Where did they come from? How did they really live? And what drove them to embark on such extraordinary voyages of discovery? Neil Oliver goes beyond their bloody reputation, from Iceland to Instanbul, to search for the truth about the Vikings.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "proper" BBC documentary 25 Sep 2012
This is a return to form in some ways for the BBC as I believe some recent documentaries have been a tad slight and almost unnecessary (eg The Great British Countryside, Planet dinosaur, A Passage through India) solely designed as ego trips for the presenters or to show off new technology. Don't get me wrong, they've not been bad, just hardly unmissable TV. Well for me this series has been unmissable. I thought I knew a fair bit about the Vikings but this series opened my eyes for example I wasn't aware that warriors were often buried in boat shaped graves, surrounded by standing stones in the shape of said boat. Neil Oliver does get the chance to travel but as he seems to spend most of his time wrapped up warm - well the Vikings were from the north after all - and by visiting locations in Russia and Turkey where the Vikings traded it emphasised the point that the Vikings weren't all berserkers and that they did more than discover America but did a lot of their business in what we in Britain would term the "East". Viking exploration of the North Atlantic and invasion of Britain is also covered so all the bases are covered. I also have to say that I like Neil Oliver as a presenter. He shows suitable awe when presented with ancient artifacts and doesn't seem to mind taking part in the set piece reconstructions. I suppose the main issue with this release is if it represents value with the series only just ending but nevertheless as a series I enjoyed it.

This 3 hour documentary has to be the most extensive and in depth one i have yet seen on "the Vikings". I was really impressed too with the presenter Neil Oliver in this documentary particularly as he makes especially interesting this series as he travels to parts of Scandinavia , Russia , Istanbul & the Middle East, and back to the UK and Ireland to show us a much more complete picture of the Viking trade routes and ways of life. Very well done. This definitey deserves an A + or 5 star rating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant & Informative 13 Oct 2012
Archaeologist Neil Oliver returns from chronicling `A History of Ancient Britain' and turns his attention to the History of the Vikings in this 3 part series.

It's refreshing to finally have a mature, entertaining and informative look at the history of the Vikings and also their impact on the world we know today. Oliver travels to Scandinavia, Turkey and many other places to discover the truth about this people, unearth their prehistoric ancestors and to debunk the myths surrounding them.

I really enjoyed this series as it isn't condescending to the viewer but on the other hand is isn't so intellectual it alienates the audience.

Neil Oliver himself is a great presenter and story teller and his enthusiasm for the subject is infectious. The locations visited are breathtaking and the artefacts that are looked at are quite special.

I highly recommend this series to anyone with a love for History and my congratulations to Neil Oliver and the BBC for another great history series.

I had high hopes for this, having always enjoyed watching Neil Oliver who always comes across as well-read and down-to-Earth (unlike the vast majority of presenters these days unfortunately, popular historians included)...And Neil has skimmed over the Vikings when relevant in other work he has done, so was hoping this would be a fresh, original look at them avoiding the biased Christian stereotypes. I wasn't disappointed. While Neil does not shy away from the topics of slavery and piracy that the Vikings were involved in (like various other advanced cultures of that period), nor does he hesitate to acknowledge their incredible achievements, looking into their prowess on the seas.

The areas of discussion are new as'd expect a "normal" BBC documentary to just focus on the obvious stuff like the Viking colonization of Britain, the discovery of America before Colombus (still not obvious enough), and the Norman legacy...but Oliver instead focuses on less well-covered topics such as the expansion of the (Swedish) Vikings into Eastern Europe, and their eating habits, as well as the bronze age origins and archeological places of interest such as burial mounds, stone circles and rune stones submerged in lakes...Overall a well written, well-presented documentary from the heart by Neil, who clearly has a lot of enthusiasm and sympathy for the pagan vikings and their lost, glorious culture

5.0 out of 5 stars Neil Oliver delivers the goods. 28 Nov 2012
Being an Norwegian i have much of the Viking culture in my blood and have always been disapointed with usually American made documentary's which focus almost only on the barbarity aspect of the viking history. If you go and visit the museum at Bygdøy where the viking ship's are located you see alot of other art that where found with the ships that makes you think that they had much more to offer than scull crushing.

Have bought ancient Britain and celtic Britain and seen them several times as i really enjoy Neil Oliver's enthusiasm when hosting those documentaries. So when i heard of Neil making a documentary about the Vikings i where really looking forward to see a program that go beyond the usual presentation of the norsemen, and i must say that Neil delivers the goods and gives you a more whole understanding, and yes he tells and shows the barbarity but that is just a little part of it. In my next life i will sit at Walhalla with Odin drinking beer and have Neil Oliver telling storys :-)

Didn't know anything about the subject, only very superficial and now I have a better idea. They were not just a bunch of barbaric people.
