Product Description

First established in Wolverhampton in 1908 the Viking brand has a history, rich in the tradition of top quality road bikes and throughout the century. Quality, style and durability have always been the hallmarks of Viking cycles. Today's Vikings embody those core qualities and look to widen the range to suit the ever increasing demands of changing lifestyles. For 2010 the range includes: Road, Trekking, Comfort, Tandems, Urban Sport and City Folders. No longer produced in Wolverhampton, each model now utilizes the technical developments of today's manufacturing processes and lightweight tubing. Viking 2010 Vitesse 16" Ladies 6 Speed Although the Vitesse borrows a little from traditional bikes, it enhances them with modern V brakes and lightweight alloy rims. Always a willing partner whether it's an occasional jaunt to the shops or your daily commute, the Vitesse comes equipped to meet your needs with 6 Speed Shimano transmission, full mudguards, kick stand, rear pannier rack and a comfort saddle.

initially very worried as I had exactly the same issues as Mr P morris. The instructions are appauling, photocopied, terrible directions and pictures.
once put together the bike is gorgeous and great value. However I came across again the same issue over the front brake sticking. I do not however have a bike expert as a mate like Mr morris, but I did call the manufacturers Avocete (number on the back of the instructions) and I was so impressed with them, they were so helpfeul and extremely knowledgeable.
It took two calls to fix the front brake and they talked me through it step by step on the phone and was all fixed in a matter of minutes. They even went as far as finding a local dealer for me who would fix it if we could do it over the phone together - however this was not needed.
I cant recommend enough. great bike, extra great staff to help you where their instruction manual fails.

This bike looks good but it is very heavy. The tyres supplied are more suitable to a mountain bike and with only six gears it is very difficult to ride up hills. I changed the tyres to 700/32. A much easier ride, great improvement.
It would have been much better to have 12 gears ie. a double cog at the front to give lower gears.
I'd rather pay the extra and get a lighter bike.

The bike is aesthetically pleasing but suffers from a couple of issues.

1) The included instructions were photocopies causing the photographs to become almost worthless
2) The included instructions were poorly written with spelling and grammatical errors
3) And after that, the included instructions were pointless as they weren't for the Viking Vitesse anyway
4) On attaching the legs for the basket to the outside of the front forks, as per the photographs for this bike, caused the axle nuts to not fully screw on to the axle hub.
5) These nuts are also made of a soft metal so I wouldn't use the supplied multi spanner as that just "ate" into the metal.
6) The front brakes permanently touch the front wheel once the axel nuts are tightened up ( ... well as far as they can be tightened to ensure that they are safe and wont undo themselves) so the wheel is not fully free running.

None of the above has been mentioned to the wife as she loves the look of it and I'd hate to disappoint her. It is a pity that the proud sticker of "Designed in the UK" doesn't seem to count for much. I guess we can all guess as to where the bike was actually made...

UPDATE: A neighbour of ours, who is a retired semi-professional cyclist, has spent the best part of a long afternoon fixing the bike's front breaks. He had to strip them down completely and build them back up. This has 'cost' us an evening meal in repayment :-)
