5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful modern take on the cables in knitting, 12 Oct 2005
I loved this book. For me though, this was not a "finished garment" pattern book. To my eyes the (few) finished jumpers looked rather blocky, and eighties, and they didn't seem to fit the models as well as they could. (This is of course my opinion, you may love the jumpers)
Where this book excels though is as a collection of cables, swatches and ideas that allow the reader to take their favourite fitted patterns and add some beautiful and inspiring cable work to them.
At no point does E. Lavold claim that her pieces are historically accurate, (the vikings left no evidence of knitting) but she does include relevant sources of inspiration (A carved dagger handle, the cables round a milestone, illuminated manuscripts), and that is wonderfully inspiring for me.
She is a clear and readable writer who gave me the confidence to graph out and design my own coils and cables, as well as use her completed cables, and sideways cables.
I fear that my work may never be free of cables again!

5.0 out of 5 stars Viking Patterns, 8 Feb 2005
By A Customer
This book is wonderful, its a great resource for anyone into aran & cable knitting , the designs can be used not only in the garment patterns in the book but also in anything you want to knit . The celtic dragon pattern for example is shown on a cushion but will soon be on a sweater I am making !

There is also some info about viking design & history, which makes interesting reading . Defintely worth buying .

4.0 out of 5 stars Viking style nordic sweaters, 4 Oct 2000
Most cable textured sweaters fall under the more traditional Guenseys, also known as fisherman's sweaters, or the more recent Aran derivation, popularly thought to be derived from the Celtic "Book of Kells". These patterns make no claim to tradition or history, but are newly and specially designed from Viking symbols. Great sweaters if you know how to cable-knit, and makes a nice change from typical Aran designs. But the sizes are large and there is only one children's design, whichis ok if you are an experienced knitter and known how to make the patterns smaller.
