5.0 out of 5 stars A viking Great! 2 Oct 2009
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
I laughed, cried and at numerous times blushed!
I loved this story. Stange but it's plausible at times, obviously with the death of her brother, not because she travled through time.

I think the way her brother died hit me hard, because, like many, i have family in the war and it scares me sensless to think they might get hurt.

Here's the story line.

After Joy Nelson brother dies, she finds herself training in the modern-day female Navy SEALs program. But then her life takes a turn for the worse. Somehow she's been thrust back in time to the cold Norselands, and is being auctioned off as a thrall, or slave--a gift for a Viking warlord, who would be a perfect candidate for Male Chauvinist Viking of the Centuries!

Brandr isn't thrilled with the slave his brothers have purchased for him. Holy Thor! The woman wants to teach him anger-management skills! And help him find his feminine side, whatever that is. She may be beautiful, but the saucy wench defies him at every turn. So Brandr makes her an offer: She can earn her his bed thrall. But when Joy dares to decline his offer, he must decide what to do with the woman enslaved to him--and the out-of-control heat between them.

4.0 out of 5 stars regular read 23 April 2013

Just a typical book to read if you have time to kill. Sandra Hill is a good
writer and her books pass the time with no great deal of thinking.

4.0 out of 5 stars Let's go a-viking again 20 Sep 2009
By Traci King - Published on
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I agree that this story repeats previous storylines in Hill's viking books, so much so that I thought I had read it before, but it was such fun to read that I still could not put it down. Unlike some of the paranormal, time travel books I have read that take themselves so seriously that they become bogged down in misery, Hill's viking series is enjoyable from beginning to end, even if some events are far from upbeat. If you have not read this series you are missing a great opportunity to read something that makes you smile, cry and be glad you made the purchase. Joy and Brandr are a great couple with terrific chemistry played out with humor and lots of hot scenes. This is one series that does not have to be read from the beginning as each story stands alone and is easily understood not matter where you start. All I can say is you are in for a real treat with Hill's vikings.

3.0 out of 5 stars not the best she's done 24 Jan 2010
By lovestoread - Published on
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I'm a big Sandra Hill fan. I buy everything she puts out, but this was mediocre for her. I was a little disappointed that I put out money for this one to be honest. I normally love her Viking stories, but I think she may have run out of ideas for them. This was formulaic, as was previously suggested, and short. It wrapped up way too fast and abruptly at the end. I'm torn between wanting more of her humorous Viking time travel, and deciding that she has done it to death. I think there needs to be a new "twist", and the SEAL thing needs to be put to rest. A new batch of characters to choose from would be nice.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ehhh.... 8 Feb 2010

There were parts of this book I loved... when we get introduced to her brothers and she then hears that one of them dies, I teared up....and some of the banter between Brandr and Joy had me laughing. Setting aside that there is in fact time travel involved for this story and I had to be in a certain mind set to even start, this was just so far-fetched it boggled the mind.

Joy, a training WEAL (female SEAL) tries to escape from her "prison" only to get caught because she forgot to LOOK DOWN and spot everyone staring up at her? I guess a years worth of WEAL training, at least as far as Sandra Hill is considered, only prepares you to knee a few guys in the balls and practice archery (a short paragraph on archery, surprised I even remembered it). The great love she feels for her brothers, practically forgotten. She remembers it when she needs to name a baby and when we're in the last few pages and she actually decides to bring them up. And Brandr? He's gone berserker?? He's deranged with violence over what happened to his family? I'm so glad we were TOLD about it.

Also, I found it very annoying that Brandr was so quick to pick up "I double-dog-dare-you" and yet continued lapsing into his viking-speak. I get that the author was trying to show the differences, but I just found it annoying.

The story held no real surprises. There were a few poignant moments, but all in all I would hesitate to pick up another Sandra Hill book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Viking-SEAL formula 2 Nov 2009
By jocasey - Published on
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I love Sandra Hill books. I have them all and there are still characters from previous books whose stories I'm waiting to read.

But this is one's a complete formula. I still liked bits, but I skimmed it pretty fast, because I've read it all before in other books. Unfortunately there wasn't much different with this story: lots of misunderstanding each other's words, fairly quick to the sex and magically falling in love, and easily believe that time travel is a possibility.

I'm still hoping, though that a story more like her early ones will show up. I still go back and read the first Sandra Hill book I ever read: "The Very Verile Viking". It's still hokey and it's still hilarious.
