Review

a great achievement...written with great confidence, with a fine sense of time and place. I felt I was there, and was excited to be there. I think teenagers, boys and girls, will find it a thrilling read. (Carnegie Medal-winning Berlie Doherty )

Of Warrior Girl: This is brilliantly evocative, with a detailed reconstruction of the lifting of the siege of Orleans. Dramatic and dazzling at times. (Children's Bookseller )

the healing revelation with which this novel ends is so unexpected and utterly right that it made me gulp. Chandler has found the perfect way to tell us how tolerant faith, religious or secular, can in any age restore and empower what self-interest and cruel intolerance take away. (Kevin Crossley-Holland in the Guardian )

A terrific tale set in medieval France . . . You'll be left breathless with pure excitement. (Mizz magazine, five-star review )

solidly rooted in the world of late Medieval France . . . the life of the countryside, court and battlefield is vividly evoked in spare, yet sensuous language. Highly recommended (Books for Keeps, four-star review )

This book is amazing! . . . This book captures you and takes you on a heartbreaking journey . . . I loved this book and found it really hard to put down. If, like me, you enjoy historical books, then I recommend it. (Ruth, teenage reviewer in Teen Titles )

Book Description

England. 878AD. A Viking princess and her war ravaged tribe come ashore. They are seeking refuge, but find only dark secrets, war and hostility . . .

Product Description

Beren, a Viking princess, is forced to flee her home after her father is killed and her people defeated in battle. Guided by her uncle, she and the remains of her tribe come to England seeking sanctuary. But Vikings have been there before and laid waste to the land, and Beren's small group is met with scorching hatred from the locals. When Beren's uncle takes her men south to fight the king, Beren is left struggling to protect the rest of her followers. The only help comes from the local abbey. The monks there want everybody to live in peace. But when Beren befriends a trainee monk, the factions are further divided, and the hatred simmering under the surface begins to boil over. And then a new threat - from Beren's own uncle - raises its head. Now the people must decide: fight amongst themselves and be annihilated by a greater power, or unite under Beren's command, and fight for their freedom.
