His books help us rediscover that connection with our past, whether through the myths and religion of the Vikings, or the forgotten wisdom of the medieval Celts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Viking Clothing 29 Oct 2009
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a great book for re-enactors! Very informative in many aspects of clothing, it ties together a lot of different approaches to the various Viking clothing discussions. Many different patterns are shown in a manner that make it possible to put together a cutting pattern, for example, faldr headscarves, the viborg shirt, various forms of apron dress. Get it, read it, make the kit!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Viking reenactor's bible! 21 Mar 2011
Format:Paperback
A lot of information, scholarly book and mostly reading. Where there are illustrations they are very useful. Doesn't offer definitive garments but offers all the information available and you extrapolate garments from that. Very well researched and respected. Definitely a research book, it does not offer easy answers, but if you want to investigate all the options this is the book.

Be aware as you are reading that it covers areas as far apart as Scandinavia, Russia and Ireland, details for one area might not be appropriate to another.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well-written resource for Viking-era clothing 13 May 2013
By M Poole
Format:Paperback
This book is not meant to be a pattern book, it's a well-researched guide to clothing from the Viking era. It covers both male and female clothing very clearly, presenting information from archaeological reports and finds. The geographic range is much wider than people would normally expect, the Vikings got around a bit.

If you're looking for a how-to book with hand-holding instructions and patterns to copy, this is not the book for you. What you will get is enough information to make informed choices if you are planning on clothing construction.

The time spent reading this book will never be wasted, you might be surprised by the sophisticated construction and materials of the clothing discussed. It wasn't all mud and frayed-edge grubby clothing back then.
