Biography

Hard rockers Magnum got their start in Birmingham, England, in the mid-'70s. The band's first album, Kingdom of Madness, came out in 1978, right in the midst of the punk rock musical revolution. That timing may be one factor contributing to the band's unknown status. 1979 saw the release of Magnum II. After extensive gigging, the group released Marauder, a live album in 1980, and Chase the Dragon… Read more in Amazon's Magnum Store

Although Storyteller is considered a fond favourite by many Magnum fans, I tend to choose this, their following record, as my favourite Magnum album as it is well constructed and well produced. Every song, in its way, flows nicely from the hit single sound of Lonely Night, world issues in Need a lot of Love, the excitement of Sometime Love which then mellows down with Midnight (You Won't be Sleeping) but maintains the balance, right through to the final, but possibly the weakest song at the end of the album, is well worth listening to many a time. Despite the poorer track, I still give it the full 5 stars.

I have to say that I'm terribly biased towards Magnum and I make no apology for that but this is surely one of the truly great albums and must rank alongside Bryan Adams' Reckless, Mac's Rumours and the like.

From the haunting 'Need a Lotta Love' to the powerful title track and the sublime 'Midnight', this album has the lot. If ever a track was a 'headphones on, volume up and wallow', Midnight is it.

'Midnight' is remixed on Chapter & Verse but was produced by Roger Taylor ( Queen ) and you can tell - the drumming's up and kills the sax.

Forget the 'best of' compilation albums - if you're going to get just one Magnum album, get this. I bought this in '86 and even today, it still has pride of place in a CD collection of over 900.

Get this and you can keep your lottery ticket in it - you'll always know where it is

I found this in LP format back in 1991 and was, altogether with On A Storyteller's Night, my only two albums during a long period of time. Definitely, far, far, far different from OASN, but it fitted very well with the kind of music that was heard by the time. Is a very different Magnum band! Light, Hair-rocking, fresh, pop... A delight! Lonely Night made me dance (definitely a must hear when you're driving in a long road), Sometime Love shaked my head (when I was using long hair was more droll), as so Red on the Highway and Holy Rider... But Vigilante is THE song of this album. I heard it once and again, and I still enjoy so much to hear it (the riff lights me up, specially when drums make their entrance).

A band doesn't need to sound the same all the time, and this album proves it. 5... 5... 5... 5 stars to this album that could deserve a good remaster to enjoy more its contents.

Still love it!
Bought this to remind me of my youth! My mate had this (cassette version) while we were away at college in 1987! Got the CD for my car and sounds great at high volume. Read more

GREAT ALBUM
I have loved Magnum since the mid 80's and have all of their studio work. Many reviews seem to regard this as Magnum at their height but I would have to disagree. Read more

Magnum's 80's commercial peak
Vigilante is a really `nice' album. The pinky blue cover with the My Little Pony unicorn rearing up, the soft caressing ballads layered with gorgeous keyboards and luscious vocal... Read more

A very good Magnum album (but beware the mp3 download quality)
This is a very good Magnum album - I don't like it as much as "Kingdom of Madness", "On a Storyteller's Night", "Wings of Heaven" or "Princess Alice and the Broken Arrow", but it... Read more

'80s rock perfection
I don't give many five-star reviews, but Vigilante gets one because it's proof that there was good music being made even in the Thatcherite taste desert that was Britain in 1986. Read more

Excellent from start to finish
Vigilante is one of those very few albums that you can stick on at track 1 and let it run to the end - knowing there isn't a poor track on the album. Read more
