5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding 11 Jan 2014

Can't believe this is free. Download absolutely tons of maps for free or for a small amount of money and not only from the UK but from even as far as USA and Canada.

I haven't learnt to use it proper myself, but for a Rambler I know this is gonna prove extremely useful, and even more becaz it can be used off-line which is really handy, plus it will let you track your progress.

This will let you 'select activity type' from walking, jogging/running. horse riding, flying plus loads of others.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" App for Hikers and Cyclists 11 Jan 2014
By Andrew McCann TOP 500 REVIEWER

This app has many attributes, especially for the countryside explorer, who likes to go off the beaten track and yet remain reassured that they do not lose their bearings.

The interface is very straightforward to manipulate.

The fact that essential components can be stored during the planning stages of an expedition and accessed offline when required adds to the app's overall usefulness.

5.0 out of 5 stars An indispensible walking accessory 3 April 2014
I’ve been using Viewranger since I had a 2-inch screen Symbian phone to run it on, so the best aprt of 10 years, probably. It is an amazing app, I love it – always have.

I originally bought it (in the early days, you had to pay a nominal amount for the app) as an alternative to the early hand-held GPS devices. The huge advantage this had over them was the OS maps it could display, at 25k. Really, who wants to go walking without an OS map?! This was so far in advance of the weird monochrome (usually) line graphics the other GPS used to display in those days. It really does make walking a pleasure, as not only can you track where you are, but you know you’re not going to get lost, or more importantly, miss a turn off the path. It can use other maps, but for me, as a walker, the 25K OS maps beat everything else hands down.

There’s loads of snazzy features in it now, it can do pretty much anything you'd want it to do, in my opinion. I did once contact Viewranger with a suggestion for a feature and they said 'but it can do that already'! I always use the track generation when out walking, this keeps a record of your walk, which you can superimpose on the map, and show you distance covered and height loss/gain.

I’ve contacted them for help a few times, and the response has always been amazing, even out-of-hours. You get a response in minutes, usually, and they know their stuff.

Speaking as walker: just get it – you’ll wonder how you managed without it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Reliable!! 7 Mar 2014

I've used this app for a while now on a variety of walks in different locations. The more I learn about this app the more I like it. Taking time to find and use its many features means it does everything I want it to and perhaps more. My concerns were GPS reliability first then battery life. The GPS hasn't missed a beat and the battery life was sorted with the ANKER 8,400ma Battery pack (works brilliant). My Android phone is showing its age a bit at nearly 3 years but still does the job well. My friends iphone works fine on the same trips we do. To use this app properly you need to buy maps (what do some of you people expect) and you can do this bit by bit by purchasing "tiles" or regions or the whole UK if you like at 50k or 25k. I buy the areas I walk at 25k as I want the extra detail. The maps are OS maps simple as. This is not a fitness app so if your interested in grams of fat burned or calories etc etc then download another app. If you want to venture outdoors, know where you are and where your going, with confidence, then you won't go far wrong if like me you have half a brain. Finally if you have a problem or a question then contact VR support. They are fast to respond and brilliant. For Gods sake don't listen to some of the people on the web...they just don't have a clue and will mislead you. I love the low star ratings, they do make me smile lol in fact.
