Having been impressed by other footprint guides I bought both this book and the rough guide to accompany me on a month long trip to vietnam. From the outset this guidebook was a big disappointment, full of inaccuracies and way off with its pricing. I purchased the book as it was published in January 2008, thus I thought that despite the high inflation currently gripping vietnam that the prices would be at least semi accurate but sadly this was not the case.
Furthermore there are several errors throughout the book. For example, the book states that you can see Ho Chi Minh;s body on an afternoon when in fact you can only see his body on a morning. Thus I missed one of the highlights of Hanoi. This was just one of several such errors.
The Rough Guide, despite being published nearly 2 years ago, was a better guidebook This book seems to have been a hastily updated version without any real groundwork done. Despite high hopes I was very disappointed by this book.

I've just got back from a big six week trip to Vietnam. I took the Footprint and the Rough Guide and used them both. Both are good but the Footprint guide has heaps more detailed information and loads more choices for hotels and restaurants. The Footprint guide has also got loads of enjoyable information on the culture and history that was good to read on the train rides. I've only used the South American Handbook before and so wasn't sure what to expect from an Asian Footprint guide. I'll definitely buy one again. The only thing I don't like about the Footprint guide is the price range thing they do for hotels. Other than that I thought it was very up to date.

Riddled with errors (approx. one per page in the sections I used). Incomprehensibly written. Poorly organized. Maps only feature hotels and restaurants, not sights. This holds true for their Thailand, Laos, Vietnam volumes.
