Product Description

Product Description

The first female signing to the renowned ZZK label she is seen as the first lady of cumbia in a typically male dominated scene. A graduate of the Music Conservatory of Morón, she first tasted the spotlight in 1998 as part De La Guarda, performing in front of a 15,000 strong crowd. It was here she also met Gaby Kerpel (better known as King Coya), the highly acclaimed composer of the music for the De La Guarda and Fuerza Bruta shows and the producer of her debut album Viene De Mi. Fusing the traditional, festive chamamé music from her father's Misiones province in the northeast jungles of Argentina, the Colombian cumbia that her mother introduced her to and the influences of her own upbringing in Buenos Aires, her music has already piqued the attention of MTV Iggy, NPR, and The Fader. On Viene De Mi Kerpel adds to it his own dark, electronic twist on Andean folkloric rhythms. Under the ZZK banner she has toured the world, playing festivals like Central Park's Summerstage and the Roskilde festival in Denmark and will return to Europe this spring.

Review

"La Yegros is at the helm of no ordinary revolution. Like Che Guevara, her domination plot extends well beyond Argentinian borders. But hers is a revolution that's feminine, joyous and tropical. It's a revolution you can dance to." --Time Out

"Cumbia's elastic swing makes it a difficult fit with programmed beats.
But Argentinian newcomer La Yegros gets it right, as she does her contemporary take on tango. Her precise, even strident, vocals effortlessly dominate proceedings, and the presence of the accordion and the even humbler melodica ensure that, while there's an embracing of urban hip-hop brutalism, the music retains a quirky humanity and good humour. Fun and funky." --The Independent on Sunday

As someone who loves latin music in all it's forms, I love Buenos Aires' ZZK records. Their music is normally instrumental or accompanied by just sampled vocals - but La Yegros's album is quite different - her beautiful singing and rapping has a refreshingly organic feel, laid over King Coya's (her husband's!) sampled beats. You can hear a lot more than just cumbia in this though. From the echo of the tango accordion to deep deep dub-like bass, each track takes you on a different musical journey. I've listened to it countless times. There are many layers to it to keep you listening. Beautiful lyrics too - if you understand Spanish that is!

I couldn't be more pleased with this album. Very different, very quirky, great listening. I recommend it to anyone who likes to hear something different once in a while.

Elevates the nuevo-cumbia genre 17 Feb. 2014
By Jay Paul - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Be sure to check this out if you like the genre! Debut CD from this Buenos Aires-based, conservatory trained singer-songwriter in collaboration with composer-producer Gaby Kerpel (aka King Coya). Combines elements of Argentine & Andean folk with great nuevo-cumbia in ways that are less frantic & more beautiful than typical for the ZZK label (in my opinion). The “1st lady of cumbia” is also the label’s 1st female artist. About time!
