Over the years I have bought many programs from Ulead - which then became part of Corel. I think my first video editing program was Ulead 8. We are now on to Corel VideoStudio X4 - some 6 versions later. I have to say I have had my ups and down with them. X3 was particularly a very bad program...full of bugs and so slow, it almost made editing a video a disaster...so time consuming...error after error. I eventually went back to X2.
X4 is a much improved program...and its very very fast. Having said that I do have a core i7 processer and 8GB ram.
Installation is easy and takes around 5 mins. Once I had installed the program, there was a service pack update followed by a number of free updates with templates. Having used the program in one form or another for years, I do now find the program easy to use. Essentially there are three steps, import, edit and share. The program is intuitive but you still have to understand a little around what you are doing. There are some great free video tutorials built in to the program, so if you have never done this before, these are very useful. The pack also has a free paper user guide - so once again, if you are stuck, this is essential reading. I was up and running in no time. You can import from a number of sources, video, DVD, TV and so on. Once you have imported the footage, you move on to the editing suite where you have a whole array of tools you can use. Finally you share your masterpiece through DVD, email, flickr, and so on.
The program does state you can use this to convert video from 2D to 3D. I'm not so sure. I have a 3D TV and 3D DVD/Blu ray player. Yes, the program did convert my video in to 3D, but the picture wasn't cracking and almost slightly blurred. However, the 3D for me is a bonus to the program, not essential.
Overall, whether you are a first timer or experienced video editor, I think this program has sufficient capabilities and tools to meet your needs. Highly recommended.

My computer spec: Win7 Ultimate 64, AMD Athlon 64 Dual Core 2Ghz, 4Gb RAM, Palit GeForce GTS 450 Graphics Card with Nvidia 3D Vision Ready (1 GB, GDDR5, PCI-E 2.0).
I fall into the category as a bit of a niche user. I wear a helmet camera (front and rear, both HD) while out cycling and doing sports, so I don't use many "mainstream" features such as burning to BluRay. On the other hand I heavily use cutting, fading, titles and multiple sources which are the primary features of any editing software.
I've been happily using PowerDirector 9 Ultra 64 Edition (PC) for quite a while now followed by Movie Edit Pro MX (PC) more recently, so I'm pretty up to date on editing software!
Corel is a brand that most people know and trust with a history of excellent software going back several years, so I had high hopes of this. First impressions are good. It has a nice simple interface, similar in style to other editing suites.
In use I found it to be ok. If I hadn't had the experience of competitor packages I would've thought this was excellent. First thing to strike me is that the playback window is slower that competitors on my (dated) PC. In Magix MX pro you can adjust the playback quality to suit the hardware but in Corel you need to enable a "smart proxy" which will create a 1/4 resolution file in the background. I did this, but it still seemed a little jerky (not too bad, but enough to be noticable). There isn't a help menu, but if you press F1 then it will launch help. In the top right hand corner is a small round button that will launch a selection of help tutorials, which is pretty useful.
As with similar editing packages, you put your source material on into tracks. These seem to change colour depending on whether they are video, sound, titles, etc. In Magix MX Pro you get a small thumbnail all the way along the timeline of the scene (or sound wave if a sound) whereas in Corel you only get a thumbnail at the start. Therefore if you're editing source materials say an hour long, you're a bit in the dark as to where you should be editing.
When you delve deeper you'll find that Corel have not bothered to add a nice interface to other windows and screens that popup, for example, I tried to change the speed of my movie to give it a bit of slo-motion. I clicked the "speed/timelapse" option and was presented with a slightly scary popup screen where you are warned about a strobe effect (I think this relates to the time-lapse feature). Other settings are for %, frames or duration, so the speed is actually ok to use. The other video options are very similar, they all result in a slightly unintuitive popup menu.
Useful out the box features are the ability to easily rotate the video by 90 degress +/- which would be very handy if you often flip from portrait to landscape on your camera.
There are a fairly decent array of titles and fades to choose from which you are able to preview in the playback window. These are nicely presented in animated-thumbnail form, so you cvan quickly scan them all at once and then choose the one that you prefer.
In conclusion, this is a fairly comprehensive editing suite but I feel that it is not up to scratch when compared to Cyberlink Powerdirector or Magix MX Pro. Luckily all the software vendors have a trial version (and Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum Suite 11 (PC) too) so the best thing to do is try all of them and then go with the one you prefer.
