Product Description

Every Video Nasty critiqued and explored, followed by the original trailers, for the first time ever on DVD! Prepare to be corrupted and depraved once more with this definitive guide to the Video Nasties phenomenon - one of the most extraordinary and scandalous eras in the history of British film. For the first time ever on DVD, TRAILERS to all 72 films that fell foul of the Director of Public Prosecutions are featured with specially filmed intros for each title in a lavish three-disc collector's edition box-set, alongside a brand new documentary - VIDEO NASTIES: MORAL PANIC, CENSORSHIP AND VIDEOTAPE.

Disc One The era-defining and critically acclaimed documentary VIDEO NASTIES: MORAL PANIC, CENSORSHIP AND VIDEOTAPE directed by Jake (Doghouse) West and produced by Marc Morris features interviews with filmmakers Neil Marshall ('The Descent', 'Doomsday'), Christopher Smith ('Severance', 'Black Death') and MP Graham Bright as well as rare archive footage featuring James Ferman (director of the BBFC 1975-1999) & Mary Whitehouse. Taking in the explosion of home video, the erosion of civil liberties, the introduction of draconian censorship measures, hysterical press campaigns and the birth of many careers born in blood and videotape, West's documentary also reflects on the influence this peculiar era still exerts on us today.

Disc Two presents the 39 titles that were successfully prosecuted in UK courts and deemed liable to deprave and corrupt. These included: 'Absurd', 'Cannibal Holocaust', 'The Driller Killer', 'I Spit on Your Grave', 'Nightmares in a Damaged Brain', 'Snuff' & 'Zombie Flesh-Eaters'.

Disc Three presents the 33 titles that were initially banned, but then subsequently acquitted and removed from the DPP's list. These included: 'Death Trap', 'Deep River Savages', 'The Evil Dead', 'Human Experiments', 'The Toolbox Murders' & Zombie Creeping Flesh. Discs 2 & 3 can be viewed either as a non-stop trailer show, or with newly-filmed introductions from a wide range of acclaimed media academics and notable genre journalists. Each disc is preceded by a brief introduction by cult horror presenter Emily Booth. The Video Nasties: Definitive Guide t-shirt is also available http://www.amazon.co.uk/Video-Nasties-Definitive-Guide-T-Shirt/dp/B004GEJ1N8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1292498585&sr=1-1&searchContext=B004GEJ1N8

5.0 out of 5 stars 'definitive guide' indeed 25 Mar 2012
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
having only seen a handful of the video nasties but have a keen interest in Italian horror and exploitation in general (and on deciding to write about such films in my course) I decided to buy this after hearing good things about it before, and was not disappointed! Excellent in-depth documentary featuring interviews with people from both sides of the fence, rightly examining the unfortunate social impact of the ridiculous witch hunts that, as they point out, put sellers of horror films in prison for longer than drug dealers...

You get a good variety of writers/critics on here that really know what they're talking about, some who were clearly very much into the video nasties trend and other cult film/horror-oriented scholars like Xavier Mendik and Kim Newman...my only criticism perhaps being that at times you get the feeling that certain people are hogging the interview/trailer introduction space, but it's all good...

Also great fun just watching the set of trailers as they are often in themselves hilarious...has inspired me to gradually collect all video nasties, even the obviously awful-looking ones! Must buy for any fan of decent/underrated (and unfairly prosecuted) horror!

As in the header. This docu, is lovingly made with a lot of detail, even down to the cute 'VHS 10th generation bootleg' filter it places over certain parts to reminisce or make a point :) There is SO MUCH content in this 3 DVD set. Hours upon hours of info and clips and (mostly) learned opinion on the subjects at hand.

Both the pro and con reviewers/interviewees are always eloquent and interesting with the exception of, the lovely but odd Emily Booth, who seems to be reading from a cue card and is always looking off screen during her moments in front of the camera. It's a little off putting, but you can tell she loves and is truly interested in the subject matter she is talking about, so it's not so bad...

The main documentary is particularly wonderful, always treating the viewer as a sensible adult, steering away from revelling in or shamelessly downplaying the content of the movies. Some of these films were genuinely unpleasant and it is made clear. Though the ridiculous nature of the furore surrounding them is shown for what it truly was and with some wonderfully funny anecdotes for good measure. Finding out about the somewhat crooked and hypocritical DPP group and Government representatives of the time, is possibly an eye opener, certainly an eyebrow raiser. The final parting interview is particularly excellent. The man interviewed ( sorry i forget his name ) makes several excellent points about censorship in general and people in Government or positions of great influence that should be heeded, but as he points out, never will be...

Above anything, this DVD set is at the very least value for money due to the sheer amount of content crammed into it. We're talking 12 hours or more in total here.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MENACE TO SOCIETY? THINK AGAIN! 10 Feb 2011
Format:DVD
I had genuine reservations about getting this set at first, even ordering and cancelling it a few times. Did I really want the whole issue of Video Nasties back in my life? I'd dabbled during the 80s, bought some titles, rented others. I thought it was all consigned to history, if not to the rubbish bin. How wrong I was!

Jake West's MORAL PANIC, CENSORSHIP AND VIDEOTAPE is just about the most important compelling film-related documentary I've ever seen. It is everything a good documentary should be - comprehensive, in-depth, balanced and impartial, entertaining, informative and thought-provoking. And it's so well put together, a masterclass in editing and construction. And boy, will it make you angry!

I haven't watched the trailers discs yet - I need time to let all the issues in the documentary sink in. Mark Kermode, in his blog, urged anyone concerned about films, film history, civil liberties, state control, rampant evangelism, fraudulent research, tabloid deceptions and political shenanigans (all my terms, not his) to watch this film, and he is so right. All sides are given the opportunity to state their case, all seem sincere, if somewhat misguided, but you, the viewer, are left in no doubt that a menace greater than that posed by the films themselves was abroad during the 1980s, and it is still out there.

The documentary alone is worth the purchase price, so all the trailers, intros, galleries, video logos, etc. can be seen as the shedload of extras they are. The real meat is on Disc One, and it should be required viewing for all film and media studies groups, all social and political history classes, in fact everyone, regardless of your politics, religion or film preferences.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you like the genre, you NEED this! 19 April 2013
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
For months I have had this title in my `Wish List' - thinking that it was quite a hefty price. However, after watching the documentary on one the SKY channels, I decided to buy this 3-disc collection. I am glad I did, as it is value for money for those of us who remember the early `80's and seeing these films on the shelves. I guess I was first `bit' with the bug in 1983, when, after watching my first `Video Nasty' at a friend's house - Zombie Flesh Eaters, I was so scared that I ran the 3 miles back home! It seems ridiculous now, but back then, these were new, and for those of us brought up on a diet of dodgy Hammer double bills on the weekend, a real eye opener!

OK, for your money you get the following:

Disc 1
Video Nasties - Moral Panic, Censorship & Videotape - Run Time- 01.11.22
Video Company Idents Compilation - Run Time- 43.12
12 Video Nasty Trailers

Disc 2
Video Nasties - The 39 Banned Films (Trailers with introductions) - Run Time - 04.03.48
Video Nasties - The 39 Banned Films - Trailers for all 39 films - Run Time - 01.27.10

Disc 3
Video Nasties - The 33 Un-Banned Films (Trailers with introductions) - Run Time - 03.22.11
Video Nasties - The 33 Un-Banned Films Trailers for all 33 films - Run Time - 01.16.33

This equates to just over 13 hours of Video Nasty heaven, and a bargain even at this price.
For those who have an interest in such films and their history, this DVD set is very highly recommended.
