Lazarillo is a fascinating read for anybody with a strong interest in not only Spanish language but also Spanish history. Lazarillo's tale is from a fairly short text first printed in 1554. It describes a loveable but impoverished young man's progress through the black comedic maze of many masters with differing attitudes, at a time of religious and 'noble' dominance in central Spain. Lazarillo wins through despite all and achieves 'honorable' status despite his wife's affiliations! The Spanish is - por supuesto - archaic but interesting to decipher through the comprehensive notes provided and a good dictionary. The evolution of written Spanish is easy to discern. Try it and see.
