By 1994, Swedish death metal (and the worldwide death metal scene in general) had largely stagnated, with most groups having either disbanded or changed their styles away from the brutal sounds that characterized their earliest work, as to make them almost unrecognizable.
I am happy to report though that there were exceptions and Stockholm's Unleashed were definitely one of them. During November and December of that year, the band entered the studio to cut their fourth LP "Victory," released in March of 1995.
Here was a band still going strong and still playing stuff as brutal as their earlier work and yet they had also clearly progressed into a well-oiled machine capable of creating catchy, memorable song structures that stand up to repeated listening.
2010 is the 15th year since "Victory's" release and I am confident that it stands as a classic of its time. From the first track "Victims of War," the deep, crushing guitar tone, the grinding buzzsaw bass and the still sick and brutal voice of Johnny Hedlund assail the listener and never let up throughout the album's 34 minute duration. The songs are in general somewhat slower to mid paced than before but the song structures are more mature and the riffs devastating and memorable, particularly on tracks like "Hail the New Age," "Berserk," and what might be the ultimate classic, "the Defender." Frontman Hedlund's undying dedication to his craft and the message of never letting the powers that be overtake you are timeless, particularly on his ode to death metal and its fans, "Scream Forth Aggression," where Hedlund urges the listener to "Join us now." In this way Unleashed are like the Motorhead of death metal, as they still continue to play brutal Viking metal up to the present day!
Again, "Victory" is a classic both for Unleashed and death metal in general from a band whose longevity is a testament both to their loyalty both to their music and their fans. Highly recommended.
