All Swiss Army knives are great - unbeatable quality and they'll last forever. Having said that, the climber is the best Swiss Army Knife in my opinion, it has the best combination of tools that actually get used - can & bottle openers, blade, scissors, tweezers. Having one of the giant ones just isn't necessary and you end up not taking it anywhere because it's too heavy.

I was bought a swiss army climber about 6 or 7 years ago by my mother. since having it I have found all the blades useful with the possible exception of the multi purpose hook, but I am not a climber. Presumably if I was this would be the icing on the cake.

Every other blade has been used often, even the reamer although I always thought reaming was an intimate pastime. If this is so, although my innocence can't confirm it, I would suspect this tool is not named with that (whatever it is) in mind.

It is compact as swiss army knives go. It fits well in the pocket and for all it does, it is not obtrusive or heavy. You will at some point need spares, the tweezers and toothpick do go walk about. These are available for 2-3 pounds each. I have lived for many years without either but at some point when you have a few pence in your pocket you will want them, and before that day you will miss them so you might as well buy them as soon as they go missing.

I would advise you, if you do buy this knife to also buy an extendable cord keyring because you will want the certainty that an extendable cord will give you, in that your knife will always be attached to a belt loop, and also whilst being firmly tied to the device you will still be able to use it. I once lost mine for 6 months and many times during that period I cursed my absent mindedness.

I got this product for Christmas, very pleased as I`d always wanted one. You actually use all the pullouts at some stage, in fact apart from the scissors ( I use the kitchen scissors) , I have made use of all the others in the last 2 months. Thank goodness for the Knife Climber, because it got me out of trouble. My Fiancee had played a rotten trick on me, tying my shoe laces together when I was fast asleep on the sofa. When I woke up, she`d gone out to her mothers 3 streets away, leaving me virtually unable to walk. The door bell rang and I looked out the window to see the Indian Take Away Delivery Man outside with our order. As I couldn`t get to the front door in time, he was walking away after ringing the door bell three times. Ah ha, my knife was in my back pocket and I cut the laces and ran to open the door. Supper was saved by the knife and my Fiancee returned, laughing of course. I said the knife had saved our supper, but due to her childishness I only gave her one of the four popodams.

I've owned one of these for almost twenty years now, and it's an incredibly useful piece of kit.

Originally I bought a Swiss Champ, which I still have, but I found that I was only using certain features of it, and the size of the Champ made it prohibitive to slip into a pocket in most trousers or jeans.
The Climber has the most useful features of the Champ, but in a slimmer casing which is very easy to carry.

The stainless steel used by Victorinox holds an edge well, and the hinge mechanism is very robust providing it's not abused by applying side pressure to any of the blades. It's a legal size to carry in the UK and is also non-locking, which keeps the Police happy, but does mean that a certain amount of care must be exercised so that it doesn't slip and fold up into your fingers!

It's worth picking up a spare set of tweezers and toothpick when you see them, as they can and do fall out and get lost from time to time, but they're cheap and readily available. When the plastic body gets scuffed it's easily restored to its new shiny condition with some Brasso or T-Cut.

The scissors can sometimes work loose because of the screw in the pivot. They've never yet threatened to fall apart, but I applied a little Loctite thread locking compound to mine and they've been fine now for ages. I also bought the small spectacles screwdriver that stores inside the coils of the corkscrew and it's incredibly useful. This will also serve to tighten the pivot screw on the scissors if needed.

UPDATE: In fact, the above gripe can now be regarded as historical, because I've just bought another Climber to keep permanently in my travel bag, and I see that on the new models the scissors joint is riveted rather than held by a screw. Great!

I recently bought the Victorinox Climber and I'm thoroughly pleased with it. It's the perfect size and weight for an everyday use pocket knife and fits in any 2-4 layer case made by Victorinox (which as it happens they don't tell you in the product description- how am I meant to know how many layers it's got just from the picture?!)I'm planning to go camping in the summer and from previous experience I know the tools will be useful- not too few not too many to make it awkward. Have to say it's a lot better quality than I was expecting as don't know much about these sorts of tools and was expecting anything in miniature to be a bit flimsy and easily worn-out, however this is not the case; each tool is very high quality and equally as good as any normal-size pair of scissors/knife! Only thing I would say is if you're planning to buy this product as a gift, don't expect any fancy packaging- it comes in a box too large for the product and I will probably ditch the box in which it was delivered in favour of a posh presentation box that I'm now going to go out and buy. This is only a minor detail though and can be easily overlooked when considering the overall product; I would easily recommend this over the other Victorinox knives available for its appropriate number of tools... and also it's much cheaper on Amazon than in any outdoor shops!
