I am a multi tool freak - from Gerber to Leatherman, and everything in between. I used to work in a shop specialising in multi-tools and self defence blades (I don't live in the UK) and I have seen and tried them all. I've bought six and kept two.
The two I kept was the Leatherman Wave and this one. But why is the Victorinox better than Leatherman's best?
*Better design - hard to describe, but it is a lot easier to use
*Better quality - I'm already on my second Wave. They rust, the pliers and screwdrivers lose their shape and free play develops on the pliers
*Better size - the Leatherman is just too small (I have size 11 hands)
*Better accesories - the Swisstool comes with a nifty socket set which is incredibly user friendly. The Leatherman's has to be purchased seperately, is quite expensive, has to be carried in a seperate pouch and is embarrasingly clumsy
*More practical - bigger everything, better layout, more accessible, better selection of tools
*Safer - I've cut myself on more than one occasion while using the Leatherman's pliers, because it has sharp edges on the outside. One can use the Victorinox with confidence
*The Swisstool has a much bigger and stronger blade than the Leatherman, which is important, because you are probably going to end up using the blade more than anything else
*Sturdier pliers. The pliers on the Victorinox are really strong - I have yet to discover the limits of the Swisstool. The Leaterman is a lot flimsier.
*Better tactile quality - another hard-to-describe factor, but the Swisstool simply feels a lot better in one's hands
*Lifelong guarantee on the Swisstool. You can't beat that. Especially since you'll probably never need it anyway.
BUT: The Swisstool is much bigger and heavier than the Wave.

I have used one of these for 6 years. I work in the Emergency services and i have used them on many occasions sometimes daily.
The main plus is the build quality and machining which i have found FAR superior to the Leatherman series which i have also owned. The next big plus is the fact you can lock all the Applications which means you can cut with force knowing the blade isn't going to spring back and have your fingers off!
The pliers are super strong and the blade quality is excellent.
I can honestly say its been used often, treated roughly, but given basic maintenence evey 6 months and has been used in a multitude of ways, and has been used to save lives, and continues to do so, and i trust it, and would recommend it to anyone who need reliable quality equipment.

I recently aquired a gerber multitool and was dissapointed with both construction and functionality. Having seen the reviews for the swisstool I moved to one of these, and i can happily confirm that all the superlatives are true.
Its a class act. Solid: distinctly chunky and heavy - its for action not dislay, though the aesthetics are pleasing in an industrial sort of way.
The design is excellent. all the tools are easily accesible without having to open the pliers first. The pliers are solid, and the handles well designed so that they are comofortable to use depite holding all the tools.
The quality appears well up to the high standards of Swiss manufacturing and Victorinox's exemplary stainless steel.
A minor idiosyncracy is tha abscence of scissors, an iconic part of the swiss army knives which my kids always go for first. Not really a complaint as this is a much heavier duty bit of kit and the selection of tools are all potentially very useful (unlike some of the weird hook thingys on the swiss knives).
I am delighted with this tool.

I recently purchased a Victorinox 303231 multitool from Amazon to replace the one I lost to the grinning 'ape' of a borderguard on a recent visit to an Eastern European country. I inadvertantly omitted to place it in my 'check-in' luggage, and left it in my 'carry-on' bag, - 'he' soon spotted it on the x-ray and triumphantly pulled it out and walked away with it. I just stood there dumbfounded, unable to do anything as I watched my beautiful multi-tool disappear, - 50 quid! - I hope he cuts an artery !.......
I cannot recommend this tool to highly, it's not until you own one that you start wondering how you ever did without it.

I have owned and used a swisstool since 1999 the first year it was produced! and have had to replace it because I lost the first and there was no question of getting another, they are quite simply the best at the standard you expect from victorinox and as I am a carpenter I have put mine through its paces and it is a pleasure to have and use! I have also had and used other brand multi tools gerber leatherman and others and I have not had the success I have enjoyed with the swisstool!! in fact I will NEVER BUY ANY OTHER MULTITOOL!!! The swisstool IS that good and I will continue to rely on mine for many many years to come.Victorinox 30323l Swisstool Multi Tool

For me there are 2 major bits to the Swiss Tool 1: the pliers and the rest. The pliers is the best part and they feel like they can handle quite a bit of force - better & stronger than pliers I've seen on other multi-tools. There's zero play, the tips are perfectly aligned & the cutters are sharp enough. I did a small electrical job and the pliers were good for removing insulation and cutting thin copper conductors.

The other tools are well fashioned but they're not in the same strength league as the pliers. There are several carrying options, which is useful, incl the pouch: I don't favour an external pouch so I've attached split rings to the tool's lanyard holes and have it in my pocket (with no pouch) and suspended from my belt using paracord which works well.

The whole package feels well built and fairly well designed. If you're after a multitool then you can do far worse than choose this and the price on Amazon is attractive. It's worth remembering that no matter how well made a multitool is, none will ever be as effective as separate (but, admittedly, bulkier & heavier) tools. If you're OK with that then this Swiss Tool 1 is a useful thing to carry around and definitely one of the best multi-tools.
