More About the Author

When she wasn't out riding her bike or making things out of loo rolls and scraps of fabric, Ruth Brocklehurst spent much of her childhood reading - mainly stories about historical characters. Since then, she has been lucky enough to combine her love of books, stories and history in her job as an editor and writer for Usborne. If she could go back in time she'd like to meet Mary Queen of Scots.

Her book about the Victorians won the Longman/History Today New Generation Award.

I bought this for my son as he's currently studying the Victorians at school and not very enthusiastic about the subject. However, we already have the Usborne History of Britain and this is just the Victorians section of the larger book, repackaged. I frequently find this a problem with Usborne books: they're excellently written and engaging for children but Usborne seem to feel they have to revamp the titles frequently and it's often difficult to know that a title is an update (especially when buying on line). Having said that, if you don't have the History of Britain then I'd highly recommend this title - varied in the subjects it tackles and informative. My son still doesn't think the Victorians are as interesting as the Romans though!

Don't be fooled by the colourful pictures. These books are very suitable for all ages over 11 as a diving board into history. They set the scene perfectly with the perfect balance of information beautifully laid out. From there one can explore the music, art, politics, architecture etc of the period. Excellent.
