Just to clarify ... 12 Sep 2008
By Bbbb
Format:Paperback
This is, in fact, an excellent slice of social history, written and photographed in the 1870s, highly descriptive of London life at the time. I think the above reviewer is a little confused - the photographs are familiar because three or four of them (eg. 'The Crawlers') have been used repeatedly by other publications, exhibitions etc. ever since. Nonetheless, this is a reprint of the original 1870s publication in which said photographs appeared, and well worth your money.

Excellent book 11 Feb 2011
Format:Paperback
I have just received my book this morning, and I can't put it down. I am a fanatic on any thing to do with the victorian era. This book is very interesting, and unusual, as it is based on the people who are actually in the photographs.
Would recommend to all!!!..................and I have not even finnished the book yet!

This book gives a contemporary view of the London of the Victorian Age and includes not only the opinions of the author but of the characters themselves in their own words. These latter accounts provide a valuable insight into these momentous times and the perceptions of the man on the street
