This a selection of line drawings taken from contemporary fashion-plates, during a period when some of the most lavish designs were created, to be worn over some of the most horrendous corsetry!
It is a super book to dip into just to enjoy the clothes and hats, and be over-whelmed by the frills, flounces, falls of lace, feathers, functional and faux fastenings etc, with which they are embellished, and it is also a useful general reference book, for anyone wanting to see how styles changed during this period, or to get an idea of the 'date' of a particular outfit seen elsewhere.

Firstly, from exploring this book it must be noted upon that this is a book of illustrations, not of descriptive texts and literature. However, within this specific topic, the book is splendid and I can highly recommend it to all who seek an intense visual peek into the Victorian age of Fashions.
As I first looked into the book I felt as though I was in this time period and looking through a Fashion magazine, honouring the splendour of one piece and the critisizing the next. It is a visual assessment which provokes thought and realisations.
When I opened the book, I was greatly excited and very eager to explore every detail of the pieces of Fashion, especially to flip the page and see what expressions of art from this marvelous Victorian period I would be beholding next.
As remarked upon earlier, the piece "Victorian Fashions" should be viewed - from my opinion - a fashion magazine from the Victorian period. However, no doubts are needed, because the book is marvelous in donating a view into the Victorian period.

I found this book a wealth of visual information for a project I am working on. The illustrations are neat, precise and uncluttered with text. I would however, liked to have seen each item at least acompanied by a date (as the images span 50 years of the victorian era.)
I'm glad I bought this reference book and would recommed it to anyone.
