This book is very good value for the more experienced costume maker, as the scaling up is tricky, and the measurements given are for the slenderest of corseted maidens! Best is to draw up a modern body block and then place the seamlines as in the period patterns illustrated, and I have achieved excellent and wearable results doing this. Within the confines of a small number of years (almost all the patterns date from the 1890's) a wide range of styles are illustrated, and these suit many plays by Ibsen, Shaw, Chekhov, Wilde and Strindberg, so it's a useful book to have.

Pattern information from the 1890's, 'when imported custom-made clothes were usually beyond the financial reach of the average middle-class americans'. Making it yourself or looking at local dressmakers patterns was the only two options. 50 garments from the pattern book of a drassmaker are covered here.

This book contains helpful information (although the lack of a grid, makes the dressmakers job - VERY HARD) The reason why I have only given it 2 stars (I am not good enough at freescale drawing!). I also found some of the patterns hard to understand in comparision to modern patterns.

Gives all measurements of pattens in imperial measurements.

The book has numerous sewing patterns which those who are familiar with Frances Grimble's books will have no trouble comprehending.
I have made up a couple of the patterns and they went together very well and with no trouble.
Recommended for anyone who has Grimble's books and is after more.
