Amazon.co.uk Review

Victoria Wood with All the Trimmings contains exactly what it says on the box. Harking back to the classic BBC Christmas comedy specials of yesteryear, the show features a star-studded cast: Alan Rickman, Richard E Grant, Michael Parkinson, Bob Monkhouse, Hugh Laurie, Angela Rippon, Roger Moore, Caroline Aherne, the list goes on. The show takes a typically idiosyncratic canter through a dream set of telly programmes for Christmas Day. Thus we get expertly played skits of A Christmas Carol (with Delia Smith as the cook); Brassed Off (in which Tony Blair solves the North/South divide by declaring everything The South); Brief Encounter (Parky as the station master, with a side order of drugs and lesbianism); a regency romantic drama (with the line "could you not stick your hand in your muff?") and lots more. What makes the production a true cut above, however, is the linking theme that takes a blatant pot shot at the modern BBC--or as Wood sees it--BBC Upmarket, BBC Downmarket, BBC Newmarket (for racing), BBC Makeover, BBC Takeover, etc. This is funny, cutting and achingly on the ball about the state of modern television.--Ian Watson

Very different to her other one-woman shows on stage. Absolutely fabulous - all the cameo appearances made it a laugh a minute. Do buy it for Xmas

Following on from her hit-and-miss experieneces with 'Dinnerladies', this Christmas special in 2000 saw Wood return to the sketch show format she had been so wonderfuly successful with in the 'As Seen on TV' series, and in the all-time classic Christmas Special 'All-Day Breakfast'.

There are some fantastic moments to savour here: the bombed out eastenders, the costume drama send-ups, Delia Smith in a Christmas Carol, the lesbian Brief Encounter - but there are also a few duff notes too - the opening sketch with Roger Moore is dull, some of the connecting moments with semi-famous TV faces are rather self-conscious and uninspired, and the 'Anne Widdecombe' musical is a one-trick pony which quickly loses its humour as it drags on for at least three minutes longer than it should.

All in all, even average Wood is better than the best of most of her contemporaries, but this needed some tightening and polishing in the writing and editing to bring it to the classic status of her earlier sketch material.

Excellence from start to finish, probably Wood's most literate work so far that combines reference to Dickens with name dropping of teen pop idols. The overkill of celebrity cameos doesn't detract from the superb quality of the writing, while the lack of sketches to feature Julie Walters is the only real criticism of this special. On the acting front, Celia Imrie and Geraldine McEwan shine as does Wood herself, while the most impressive sketches are 'Brief Encounter', the wordy 'Plots and Proposals' and inspired ER spoof, 'WI'. The parodies are far more intelligent than recent French and Saunders offerings and the quality of this one-off programme makes the viewer long for a series. Sheer billiance and very Christmassy.

A great way to relax and remember those classic Victoria wood moments. The good thing about her and this DVD is you can watch over and over again, it's still funny!

Brilliant, just brilliant
I haven't laughed so much for a long time. Extremely clever and some wonderful word play. My favourite? The "Brief Encounter" spoof. She's a marvel.

worth digging out over the festive season
As it's unlikely to become a regular BBC Christmas repeat (the BBC seem to have a blind spot when it comes to Victoria Wood) my advice is to buy this if you're a fan. Read more
