3.0 out of 5 stars Times Colonist Newspaper - Kindle Edition 23 Feb 2011
The first thing I did went I received my Kindle was check if the Victoria Times Colonist had a Kindle version - and was pleased to learn they did. I have had a subscription now since Christmas 2010. Whilst it's ok, it's not great...and certainly isn't the full version of the printed one. I'm happy not to see any adverts as I no longer live in Canada but things like births/deaths/notices etc. are missing from the Kindle and as I keen in close contact with my family there would like to see these included (along with the comic strips).

What I've noticed lately is that some days it doesn't get downloaded at all (there is NO Monday edition, which I know) and sometimes there's a listing on my device for the day but it appears in the archive folder and hasn't actually downloaded and simply refuses to do so. I tried 'sending' the missing past few days through the Amazon site and no luck.

I've also noticed that articles tend to be repeated word for word from one day to the next.

I'm considering cancelling the whole thing unless these issues are fixed. Sadly I could not find any online way of complaining about these problems either on Amazon's Kindle site or on the Times Colonist site.

1.0 out of 5 stars Left wanting more 18 Mar 2011
By Raven - Published on
This left leaning paper focuses on news from Victoria and around Vancouver Island. With such a strong local focus, it sometimes lags behind on national and international news stories. From time to time the writers drift off into opinion-land and forget that they are presenting news. However, there is no better paper covering this part of the world.

There is something that feels empty about the electronic version of this paper. Most of the major articles are there, but a lot of what makes this paper worth reading has been cut out from the e-version.

There are no pictures. This may be because I receive the international version on my kindle - I'm in Canada and not the USA. A great deal of what is available in the Kindle version of this paper is also available on the Victoria Times Colonist's website; including sections that are not on the Kindle version like the classifieds.

Given all this, one has to decide if the convenience of having this paper on their Kindle is worth the sacrifice. At the current price, I thought it best to pay a few pennies more and stick with the paper version for the time being.
4.0 out of 5 stars Great local BC newspaper 11 Dec 2012

I like their coverage on local BC news esp. on Vancouver island and the lower mainland. The local business section is also well done in my opinion.
1.0 out of 5 stars Too Costly 30 Oct 2012
By Nik Shadow - Published on
My new hard-copy paper subscription cost as of October 2012 is $22.40 tax included (it just went up). This is 6-issues a week delivered to my door by 6:30 am. The kindle subscription is $13.99 a month? No paper costs, no distribution costs, no petrol costs, no carrier costs *but* more expensive? I just don't get it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Freezes/crashes Kindle screen during navigation 50% of reading time 26 Feb 2012
By Dane County Woman - Published on
During 14 day trial, got what I expected from Victoria Colonist content. Local news, local flavor (I live midwest USA but love British Columbia as vacation destination). For that I'd give it 3-4 stars for decent detailed local coverage. Negative stars for crummy tech problem though.

Half the time when navigating from the first page, it freezes/crashes the Kindle screen. Rebooting doesn't work until plugged in to recharge -- and this is true even when Kindle freshly charged. Making Kindle unusable for any purpose until following this ritual. And FORGET starting to read/navigate the Colonist after reboot, it just starts the freezing all over again.

Kindle reviewers of more prominent + widely circulated papers have gotten circular referrals between newspaper IT folks or Kindle troubleshooting (each saying other was source of issue) so I am not bothering, just unsubscribing.

Note that this crashing has not happened to me with 8-10 Kindle newspaper and magazine subscriptions since starting to use Kindle in mid-Dec. 2011 and it is now late Feb. 2012.
