Book Description

The tall, flaxen-haired lord brought colour to Victoria’s cheeks – not to mention a flutter to her pulse. He was so handsome. What girl would not blush? And he was flirting with her! Lady Victoria Arbuthnot has always done exactly what she wants. So she’s delighted when she bags drop-dead-gorgeous Lord Malfrey before she’s even got off the boat from India. But then a dashing young sea captain starts spreading stories about her man. Could it be that Vicky’s happy-ever-after with Lord M. might not be so happy after all?

About the Author

Meg Cabot is a very funny young author who has the Midas touch when it comes to hilarious teenage fiction. She lives in New York City with her husband and one-eyed cat, Henrietta. She writes for both teenagers and adults – and has become a world-wide best-seller with THE PRINCESS DIARIES series. Her novel for adults, THE GUY NEXT DOOR, is also published by Pan Macmillan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Brilliant!! 4 Aug 2004
By *
Format:Paperback
This book is set in London, 1810. It is about a 16-year-old girl named Lady Victoria Arbuthnot who is the heiress to a £40,000 fortune. She spent her childhood in India and, at the start of the book, is returning to London to live with her aunt, uncle and cousins. Aboard the ship, she meets the devistatingly handsome Hugo Malfrey, as well as the odious Jacob Carstairs. She accepts Hugo Malfrey's marriage proposal during the voyage and Jacob Carstairs seems intent on persuading Victoria to break the engagement, claiming that Hugo Malfrey is a rogue. Victoria doesn't believe a word...but could later discoveries mean that Jacob was right?
This book is full of romance, humour and is generally a very satisfying read. I absolutely love it and can read it over and over again without ever tiring of it. If you enjoyed 'Nicola and the Viscount,' read this. If not, try it anyway.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for romantic tweens 24 Feb 2007
Format:Paperback
I read this book several years ago when I was around 11 and thoroughly enjoyed it. It is based on a young girl who is very rich and although at first slightly ignorant to English society, quickly is engaged to a gorgeous Lord Malfrey who turns out to be not quite what he seems. Victoria's concerns are made even more apparent by the Captain Carstairs, who by warning her against him harms her opinion of the Captain and her own pride.

Meg Cabot has many loose similarities to the classic Jane Austen book, 'Pride and Prejudice' such as the sly Lord who seems like Mr Wickham and the captain like Mr Darcy. Also the Aunt and Uncle of whom she stays with are called the Gardiners although the fact that she is worth a great deal shows the many differences.

Older female readers about 14plus may find it a bit too easy of a read but age 13 downwards I think would enjoy this book as its plot follows many romantic genre conventions.

Meg Cabots flair and style would make any girl enjoy this book but with the humourous storylines and attractive characters, this book will be left in the girls imagination for a long time to come!

3.0 out of 5 stars It's interesting but... 30 Jan 2005
Format:Paperback
Another book from Meg Cabot...tells the story of Lady Victoria Arbuthnot who lived in India with her 3 bachelor uncles but is now being shipped off back to England to find herself a suitor. Although I enjoyed this book, it just wasn't as good for me as The Princess Diaries, but is enjoyable nonetheless. Good to read when you can't get hold of any Princess Diary books, for a journery or what not.
