The Requiem revisited 24 Mar 2012

I have always loved Victoria's Requiem since hearing it first on Radio 3 in 1990 and then buying the superb version by Westminster Cathedral choir led by David HIll - available in a number of guises on Hyperion and still my favourite recording of this work. Re-listening to McCreesh and the Gabrieli Consort recorded in 1994, a recording I have had for years and dismissed, I was struck by the superb pacing, the precision and security of intonation and the excellence of the Archiv recording. At the current silly price buy it with confidence. I am sure that this wonderful recording is destined to become download only very soon.

Alongside Tallis's 'Spem in Alium', this has to be, for me, the most beautiful and profound choral music written. Lush and theatrical, yet intimate and deeply felt, this is glorious music. The final evocation of the Absolutio, 'May she rest in peace', rendered me breathless and almost tearful by its hushed beauty and sense of eternal peace.

Wonderfully paced recording of what must be some of the most glorious music ever written. The Kyrie is surely what it is all about. Enough said.
