Victoria - Choral Works

I have rehearsed and sung Victoria's Salve Regina on three occasions, first in a choir of some thirty voices, a cappella, secondly in a choir of some twelve voices accompanied by a similar number of early instruments and lastly one-to-a-part, with eight voices, a cappella. From the very first occasion I wanted to sing it again and hear it again.

I am a great fan of Harry Christophers' Sixteen and I eagerly waited for delivery of their CD. I played it. Was this the same piece that I had sung?

The last section is the climax of the piece. For me, its tempo is far too fast. The Sixteen sing it in 123 secs, La Capella Reial de Catalunya under Jordi Savall sing it in 146 secs. A performing score edited by Martyn Imrie counsels against "unseemly haste" and suggests a crotchet speed giving 156 secs. The Choir of Westminster Cathedral under James O'Donnell sing it in 210 secs.

At the Sixteen's tempo, the elegant and moving descending scales of the sopranos lose their emotional impact. The passing dissonances go past too quickly. The passion and loving devotion of the words vanish.

The soprano sound is beautiful but it overpowers the lower parts and steals the limelight. In this last movement, lower voices of both choirs are singing "O clemens, O pia, O dulcis" at a measured speed (in semi-breves in the modern score) while the other voices embroider them above. On this recording I can hardly hear them, if at all. This is polyphonic music, each strand is important and deserves to be heard.

What makes a great performance? It moves you at the time and the music lives on in the memory.

An unknown composer to me but this cd is a treasure. Renaissance repertoire± it is like balm for my soul. If you are hasted and you feel too busy, play this music and you calm down.

5.0 out of 5 stars gorgeous music 2 Oct 2012

I bought this CD for a friend after buying one for myself. This album was everything I was hoping for! There are at least 3 different versions of Ave Maria here, which is a really nice change of pace. The music is absolutely lush, and -- well -- heavenly.
