'Charts her life from school to the Spice Girls to the States . . . The attention to detail is fascinating'
--Look Magazine, 15 September 2008

Product Description

Victoria Beckham is one of the most famous women in the world and an iconic figure for modern women in Britain. She has been a constant source of fascination for the celebrity hungry public since she first claimed our attention as Posh Spice in the mid nineties. Since then love and marriage to arguably the most famous man in the country, footballer David Beckham, has increased her wealth and popularity until she now eclipses the other Spice Girls who shared that initial success. But despite her star status, critics continue to undermine her, holding open season on her apparent lack of musical talent, constantly scrutinising her body shape, her looks and her hair as well as speculating wildly on the state of her marriage. Now, the UK's leading celebrity biographer, Sean Smith, believes it is time to reassess this remarkable woman. New research into her background, her early life and ambitions reveal a fascinating portrait of the girl who transformed herself from an overweight, spotty and bullied teenager into the aspirational figure she is today. Victoria is a rare combination of wife, mother, fashion leader and business woman.Smith assesses how she has conquered the low spots of fame including the jealousy, the security threats to her family and her husband's alleged infidelity. Fully illustrated it will include accounts of the headline-grabbing Spice Girls Reunion tour.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful and interesting, 13 Oct 2008
By A Reader from Cardiff (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
It's very difficult not to feel that we already know everything there is to know about Mrs Beckham. I think I see her image somehow, somewhere every single day. I was intrigued then to discover a book which on the outside cover promises to reassess her life and career. It does not disappoint. This is a superbly balanced account of a famous life which performs the subtle service of making you like the subject without in any way resorting to sensationalism or heavy-handed bias.

The book is divided into two parts - the first, Victoria Adams, dealing with her family's surprisingly working class roots and guiding us through her early life up to the Spice Girls. I was intrigued to discover that she was much more talented as a singer and dancer than I had imagined. She also had a natural flair for image and came top of special image classes at her stage school. I also had no idea she was chosen for the Spice Girls because of her appeal to the `older man'.

The second part, Victoria Beckham, chronicles her relationship with David Beckham and how she has developed their partnership as a brand. Even her supposed failure as a solo artist was, in fact, accompanied by million pound fashion contracts which were clearly part of a long term plan. The book feels very up to date even managing to squeeze in her new lines for New York fashion week.

I have read two books by Sean Smith, one on Kylie and one on Britney, and he seems to have a talent for portraying modern day `heroines'. There's so much detail and I particularly like the Life and Times section which details all the highlights of Victoria's life in twelve packed pages. A word also about the pictures which are beautifully laid out over 24 pages and contained many I had not seen before. They deftly showed the girl changing to a woman and should please all Victoria fans.

Having read this book I find myself outraged at the stupid and unfair way Victoria Beckham is often portrayed in the media. I like her much more than I did before.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, 21 Oct 2008
The trouble with most biographies is that the writer doesnt offer the reader enough new information or an accurate timeline. That's not the case with this author and that's why I am a fan of Sean Smith's books. It is clear that he has been on the road, seen the places he writes about, made connections and pieced together a book that will interest his readers.

Victoria the Biography contains a great picture section with photos I have never seen before, interesting anecdotes from people who knew Victoria, such as her first manager and dance teacher, and details her early life in depth. I also particularly like the way Smith examines the phenomenon that is Brand Beckham.

I highly recommend this book to any Victoria Beckham fan and any biography fan.
