Product Description

Review

Martin Baker has a lovely way with the musical phrases, letting them emerge from the dark recesses of the cathedral, allowing them generous space in which to soar and float before gently subsiding back to the vast darkness from which they emerged. It creates a sensation of great timelessness and awesome splendour which does the music far greater service than something more focused on specific details. --IRR,Nov'11

Full-bodied(and) monumental. Performance *** Recording **** --BBC Music Magazine,christmas'11

The latest Victoria disc from Westminster Cathedral arrives at the end of a year that has seen a number of important releases to mark the 400th anniversary of the composer's death...the performances of both the masses here are thoughtful and beautifully shaped, and neither the plainchant-based Missa de Beata Maria Virgine nor the parody mass Missa Surge Propera, based upon a Palestrina motet, has been recorded many times before.*** --Guardian,01/12/11

The Choir of Westminster Cathedral is on good form here. --Gramophone,Jan'12

For Victoria sung in the English Cathedral tradition, look no further. *** --Classic FM Magazine,Feb'12

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good Victoria 26 Dec 2013
By Sid Nuncius HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
This is a disc of two very fine mass settings by Victoria, plus a setting of Salve Regina and the motet Surge Propera by Palestrina on which the second of the masses is based. They are lovely works by one of the Renaissances great composers, full of intense spirituality and wonderful harmonic invention. I love Victoria's music and it is very good to have these two masses available on disc.

The performances are very good, too. Westminster Cathedral are a world-class choir with a large and distinguished discography behind them. The reservation which leads me to give this four stars rather than five is purely personal: I often find the sound of larger chapel and cathedral choirs a little inflexible and impersonal. I prefer the more intimate and flexible sound a smaller choir because I find that discs like this, however wonderful the music, can begin to find a little samey after a while and for me this applies here. The larger choir combined with the very resonant acoustic of Westminster Cathedral makes the choir sound rather distant and detached which I find robs the music of some of its real impact.

Hyperion's presentation is, as always, very good and the notes are scholarly and detailed. Personally, I prefer recordings by ensembles like The Tallis Scholars (eg Victoria: Lamentations/ Padilla: Lamentations) or The Gabrieli Consort (eg Victoria: Requiem (Officium Defunctorum, 1605)), but this is purely a matter of personal taste. Plenty of people disagree with me, so please don't let me put you off. The performance is excellent of its kind and if you like the sound of a cathedral choir you can't go wrong here.

4.0 out of 5 stars Victoria's music from Westminster Cathedral 11 July 2012
By Bruce A. Mcdonald - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Westminster Cathedral, London, has long been noted for its performances of the music of the great Spanish composer Tomas Luis de Victoria (d. 1611). I am a great fan of his music, and what is here is, not too surprisingly, superb, but the recording is not as clear as it could be--the sound has more "wash" than is characteristic in their earlier and better recordings--the after-echo tends to blur the musical lines. This is unusual for Hyperion, usually so sharp in this matter, so it may be the preference of Westminster's current choirmaster, Martin Baker; I hope not.

5.0 out of 5 stars Etherial. 16 Sep 2012

These are some of the greatest works written in the Renaissance, the Missa Surge propera being published and performed numerous times over the years.
The Westminster Choir is in fine form, and does full justice to the music. A high recommendation.
