I picked this book up by chance and, after having read the synopsis on the back cover, decided I liked the sound of it. I wasn't disappointed as the story had a good plot, without all the complicated twists and turns prevalent in many mystery/thriller novels. The central character, Randall Jowett, is a figure who (despite of the dreadful thing that has been a part of his past) is likeable because of his very vulnerability. He is (physically) very attractive, which helps! Randall was drawn into a robbery 5 years previously, but his then partner-in-crime turned this into a slaughter of innocents for which the murderers were never found. Randall was distraught when this happened and has lived with the guilt, to the point that it has ruined his life. He cannot help thinking about these innocent victims and, wracked with guilt, he returns to the place of the murder, hoping to come to terms with what has happened and hopefully to make amends. He rents a cottage for 5 weeks, but becomes the sexual and romantic focus of the owner of the cottage (a woman much older than Randall, whose marriage is all but dead). Randall, needing the affection and closeness that she brings, falls in love with her. But how long can the affair last before Randall is forced to admit his terrible past and perhaps suffer the wrath of the villagers and the victims' remaining family? If he did reveal his dreadful secret to his lover, does she love him enough not to betray him to the police?
